My first smithing attempt.

I decided to try my hand at blacksmithing by making a knife out of a piece of rebar. I don't have many tools, I have no grinder, no bandsaw, no ball or cross pein hammer. I smacked at this piece of rebar with a claw hammer till it took shape. Any ideas on how I could make it better next time are appreciated.

I'm no smith, but for a first attempt it looks quite good, especially since you said you don't have any proper tools.

The best way to get better results next time, is to get some better tools. A couple of hammers, some files, maybe a hacksaw, all of which could easily be found in a pawn shop, and some old enough to still be quality pieces.

I think it's a good blade especially given your experience and tooling. The tang would be easier to put a handle on if you straighten it. Unless you want to leave it bare. You need to define your ricasso and then start draw filing the bevel. For your handle you could also split a block of wood or whatever you want and inlay the tang into it. The curve of the tang does flow nicely.

Thank you for the tips! Will do.

Rebar is not a good knife steel. It may be good to practice on if you want to burn some fuel... I'd suggest that you go buy some steel from a local steel supplier if you want to forge round bars.

I get W1 drill rod from a local steel supplier, and forge it to shape.

I'd also advise to invest in a decent hammer. It will make things go easier.

Can you make tongs from rebar?

Yes, and try to use the highest grade rebar you can.
Tongs btw are very fussy to make. Anybody can make tongs what can open, close & pinch something.
But to make useful tongs, either a guy is very skilled or somehow a smithing prodigy.

I hope.im a prodigy lol I made.my.first set of tongs (not finished yet) But they look pretty promising (since I made them based of a video game picture lol)

I'll let you know if they are "useful" when I'm done
I just have to pin them or through bolt so I can add just the tension?.

But for my first go I think they are a successful sorry I haven't paid to post pics yet
