My first Sodbuster - oh-oh............

Received my first Sodbuster the other day - the Queen Country Cousin in Linen Mircarta. I was really hooked with my first large toothpick as I said in that thread, but now I am also hooked on this pattern. Does it ever stop??

I've had a hard time as some of you know finding knives that work for me with my weak hands and fingers, and have now found another one that works and also one that I love the pattern. If only it was a little larger it would be great. The closed length on the Queen is 3 5/8 and I am thinking 4" or more would be even better when comparing it to my #12 toothpick. This one is a keeper for sure, but am now on a quest for a couple Sodbusters that are 4" or longer. In my limited research so far, it looks like the standard size Case Sodbuster fits the bill very nicely, and is at the top of my next buy list. I also have to try the GEC Bullnose after reading all the great reviews and the size fits my criteria also.

Just wondering what other Sodbusters that are currently available 4" or longer. I am also going to keep my eye on ebay for some vintage large Sodbusters.

I've been wanting to try one of those Queen Micartas. Nice knife. If you like the pattern, you'll need a Sodbuster Junior along with the Bullnose.

yeah i have been pondering the bullnose in orange (just pondering mind you lol)
but from what i can see, it looks like the point is ..pointer, plus its 1/4" longer and has a lanyard hole!

so that may be next on my list...but like i said, still in the pondering stage :)

Hook...line...sinker...welcome to the obession... I haven't stoped and I have over 100 different soddies. Some porn for you:D

I need to get a pick of all my wood handled soddies, they're some beauties. As for the extra length, get a GEC Bullnose. It's a smidgeon longer thna your Queen and feels great in the hand, one of my favorite takes on the pattern.

Coal,

I think you're getting ready to step into the abyss. I'm pretty darn new to the forum and to knives. But, dang, I've bought a bunch.

I started with a Case SB Jr., as my first "working knife" or whatever the term is. Then, I happened across a thread and saw Trevor's collection. Anyway, then bought a Bull Nose. Nice knife as is the SB Jr. The Bull Nose is a little larger, nicely made FF and so on. A truly nice knife. Can't fault the F&F, everything tight and no gaps. I have medium hands and it's a great knife to use and comfortable. Also, not a problem to slip into a jeans' pocket. I guess in the world of knives the Bull Nose and the Case SB Jr are both reasonable in price. Though I could be wrong, I don't think the Bull Nose would cause a problem with your RA.

Anyway, today, after receiving a GEC #72 and a few days ago a Case small? Texas Jack, yes, I ordered a few RRs and a Robert Klaas Brown Mule. The Mule was truly inexpensive. Actually, almost free????? And, yes, Trevor has Mules. I bought the small one. Can't remember the length though I like to keep knives under four inches.

Anyway, just wanted to say, hi.

Regards,

George

Thanks for your insight George. I am going to try the standard size Case sodbuster next as a 3.5" knife is a bit small for me to hold on to. And thanks for your input on the Brown Mule - putting that on my list also.

On my list:

Case Sodbuster (not the jr.)
GEC Bullnose
Klaas Brown Mule

Well at least you can get a full size Case soddy for about $25, so it won't break the bank. I have never warmed up to that pattern. The only one I ever considered was the 1st gen Queen Micarta version, but their new one doesn't work for me.

I EDC a sodbuster, and the more I use it, the more I appreciate the pattern. The nice belly toward the tip is great for slicing meat and fruit, the strong pull feels secure in use (never feel like it's about to close on my fingers), and the handle feels great in the hand. Fantastic, utilitarian pattern.

Can't go wrong with a Case Soddie, either. I like mine, it's not great F&F wise (has play, gaps) but it is an awesome working man's knife.

Coaltrain,

I'm in the same predicament. I really like my few Case folders but the Sodbuster really fits for most everything I do. I have two jr and a full-size. the 5" is used more around the property and in the house than any of my other knives.

Just wait till you see what are made in the custom Sodbuster styles! I was in the for sale section and came across Phil Thams work! Oh dear, a new way to spend $$!
I'll be posting a pic.

Chris

Looking forward to your pics Chris. I've seen a couple of our knife makers' sodbuster versions in the exchange and they are certainly beautiful.

Although Salt, the Case CF Sodbuster is very nice! I wish I kept mine.
If Case makes a run of Micarta Soddies, I'm in big time.

This is my first knife with Micarta scales and I really like them. For my traditionals I tend to like the woods the most, but I will have some more knives with Mircarta for sure.
