My first Sodbuster - oh-oh............

Micarta is a classic. Many forget this. And, it's just beautiful on a knife.

Absolutely.

It's strong, durable and excellent in hand. The Queen Country Cousin has nice thick rounded handles which add to the ergonomics. I hear there is a larger lockback version of this Queen now.

Thanks, Will

someone two weeks ago won a Herder sodbuster on ebay for 32 bucks. It was nice but I quit bidding at 25 'cause it was sharpened agressivly.

I really like the Case Sodbuster, it's an all time favourite. But all the fancy handles are for the Jr. models... I would die for a Sr. Sodbuster with Amber Stag handles !!! And somehow, while I'm at whining, Case could maybe readjust that overwhelming tang/kick because it's almost half an inch lost on the cutting edge...
Speaking of that kind of style, A.G Russell killed it with its Cowboy. It's an overall alltime winner. Great job !

+1 on the AG Russell rancher and cowboy. I have the rancher in yellow derlin and i love it....looking at a coral micarta as well, lol!

Thought I should post an update -

I really liked this knife - the shape of the frame and especially the green micarta. But after working with it for a couple days I found it just too hard to open like the many other slip joints I've tried. I tried lubricating the pivot joint and leaving it partially open for a few days. It is now in the hands of its new owner who is very happy with it.

I really like the sodbuster pattern as I said in my original post, but now once again a bit scared off as I am with most slip joints now. I've had to take a step back and take a good look at where I am going with my future knife purchases. A large sodbuster I would love to have but I am done buying any slip joint knives for then time being. Not the fault of the knife or pattern in any way.

This thread makes me want to pick up a Bullnose again. The one I had was great with a 4-5 on the pull scale, and it was easy to pinch open.

If you would like a GEC slipjoint with a Mild pull, check out the Eureka Jack #92. I handled one the other day for a few minutes before shipping out for a trade. The Pull on the main blade must've been about a 3 to 4 while the secondary coping blade had a pull of about 1 to 2. I plan on picking one up for myself soon. I didn't think I would be that into it, but after handling the 92 the other day, I'm sold. I also have issues with my fingers and hands at times, so a lighter pull is more desirable to me as well (as long as it has good walk n talk and good snap).

Coaltrain, the GEC Bullnose knives I own are all able to be pinched opened and fall somewhere in the 5 to 6 pull range. If you like the sodbuster pattern I would suggest you try one of those. Another great option is the AG Russell Rancher or Cowboy. They have blades that protrude out when closed that makes it easy to grab and open, very easy on the pull scale and lock up solid.

Thanks for the suggestions. The #92 sounds great as far as the pull, but I've found these smaller 3.5" patterns a bit small for me to handle easily. It seems a 4" or larger is best.

The bull nose sounds good being a pinchable blade, but the 5-6 pull still scares me off.

I'm not trying to be difficult and really do appreciate the suggestions.

Yep I am very happy I got this knife. I recommend it to anyone (except Coaltrain) who likes sodbusters. Micarta and D2 steel, a great combination.
