Just what everyone wants to read another newbie who got there first spyderco, whoopie!!! I pretty much collect traditional folders, schrade for the most part. but anyway I posted a thread a while back on the folders forum about carrying a schrade knife with a pocket clip, and how I had trouble sharpening it etc. Someone made mention that I should give a spyderco a try. Reason being I use a knife a lot during the day sometimes 2 or 3 times and sometimes 25 times a day. So a pocket clip is necessary so with dirty hands Im not digging in my pocket for a regular folder all the time filling my pockets with dirt and grease. Either way Ive been trying to trade for a spyde for quite a while on the trade forum but no luck cause guys with spydes dont really want any old folders and such. So I went to a knife show and bucked up and bought a spyderco endura 4 wave with the vg-10. I had to give $55.00 for it NIB. Didint seem too bad? My first real question is this cause im hard on knife blades, can anyone recommend a sharpening system or method. And second Im gonna keep looking for another sypderco maybe I can trade for a used one or something anyone recommend another model That may interest me considering size etc. Id even consider going a little bid smaller cause the endura4 is rather big but I dont mind carrying a big knife. I wish you could get these with assited opening like a kershaw. the pic below is the 2 schrades Id been carrying that will be replaced by my new endura. any thoughts or input will help.- Joel

Spyderco triangular sharpener, it's one of the easiest and best out there. Sharpens plain edge (PE) and serrated (SE) edge. The Delica is the enduras little brother and comes with or without the wave. Put spyderco in google and take a look at some of the sites for knives and sharpeners. Best wishes.

Welcome to the spyderco boards. I have both of the Schrades you pictured, actually have 4 of the Lake & Walkers (I kinda like them). A Delica is a bit smaller than your Lake and Walker and that would be my recommendation for you as well. Its just the right size for EDC.

I just recently got a Spyderco sharpmaker and it is very easy to use, but a bit more expensive than some other sharpeners. Its best at light to moderate sharpening jobs and will get you knife razor sharp. Benchstones seem better suited to heavy duty work.

Hi,
I carry a mini-manix (had three now only two:)). It is a stout knife wiht a nice, strong blade. I also carry an old delica that I recently modified to put on a new clip and change the serrated edge to plan edge.
For heavy work, I recommend the Mini-manix as it is hefty in the hand, with a great grip.

Good luck and take care,
Brett

great info guys I really appreciate it. Just went to ebay and checked out one of the mini manix and I gotta say I like that too. I can see a problem developing here I like all of them!!!!!!

Another vote for the sharpmaker, however I also use a strop to put the finishing touches on the edge.

As well, please let me be the first to welcome you to the very top of a very slippery slope! :D

Congrats on the new Spydie. The Endura is an industry classic. One of the best value per dollar knives in any price range IMO.

Congratulations on your first spyderco. I started with an endura back about 91 or 92 and have kept one in my RFP since. I still have my first one and it's very carryable still. I did upgrade with the newer models though because they keep getting better and better. I've got one like yours in my pocket as we speak now.

I very much reccomend the Sharpmaker for anybody without very specalized needs and experience. I really wish I would have had one when I started learning to sharpen back in the 70's. Pure genius, like the spyderco knives themselves. Joe

i love my enduras...can't get enough of them, i think i have 15 or so of them now..lol. another vote for the sharpmaker and if you want something smaller the clay 3 with g10 is awesome.

The Sharpmakers great but I prefer my Lansky even though it is fiddly and takes more time it is more precise.

I am going the other way from tacticals and spydies and am getting interested in the classics. I am looking for a Boker congress right now. I think we just like something and then want something fresh after a while.

Congrats on the new Endura.

Not counting my Byrd Cara Cara G10, an Endura wave was my first Spyderco too. It sure as hell wasn't the last :D

Hi gradall5200...

Welcome to Spyderland. If you want to try something different from your Endura, you might try either a Delica 4 (has already been suggested), which will be like a smaller version of the Endura, or one of the Natives.

The Natives are more traditional looking because the smaller opening hole allows for a blade without the hump that the E4/D4 series has. Native 1s are S30V steel and 3" blades. This steel is quite good and will give you very good edge retention and corrosion resistance, though it's a bit more difficult to sharpen than VG10. The Native 3s are VG10 steel. They have a slightly different handle shape that the Native 1s.

I would suggest a Sharpmaker for sharpening. It's a good product and the DVD instructions are easy to follow. You can get a Sharpmaker and any one of the knives mentioned for $100 or less online.

MY endura 4 update. been carrying it now for 3 days at work and Im sold. Ive been trying every night to trade at the exchange for another one. I just dont see myself ever finding another edc knife like one of these. My closet was allready jammed up with knives now I can add another name to the list. Gotta go get me a sharp maker now!!! And I love the way the wave works its perfect for me cause Im getting my knife out so much to use it. thanks guys.- Joel

Hey Gradall. See you've been bitten by the Spyder. Since I started with them I don't even carry my Schrade's anymore. I just wish my wallet could handle my wish list. It's gotten so bad I've thought of selling off some of the old folders.
I've got my eyes set on the mini manix right now. What a tank. Just don't have the funds for it. Good luck with your new affliction. :)

I suppose so but I find the Endura 4 to be a bit whispy. Almost too light, I don't care much for the lack of heft. The big Manix that I had felt good, Like a Buck 110.
