Well after the New York City show, and Bram Frank's very impressive demo of the Gunting. I am now a Spyderco convert. I have to admit for years I stayed away from Spyderco products. For no other reason other than when I first developed an interest in knives a popular knife show vendor who carried just about everything, really pushed Benchmades. I have heard many horror stories about BM's but all of mine have served me well over the years. However I haven't liked the direction upon which there new products are heading. I have also found this vendor I spoke of before to be far from honest and ALL of his comments about Spyderco to be untrue...
I was beyond impressed with Spyderco's entire line. But handling the Gunting and talking with bram sealed the deal. I am now the proud owner of bothe the Live model and the Drone as well as all 4 video's (special thanks to george at video quest) and the skunkworks holster. I look forward to adding to my collection, and hope to get my hands on a Chinook soon... Thanks for a Awesome product!

Ahhh Glockaholic has joined the GUNTAHOLIC group..ROFL!...
Glad you enjouy the gUNTINg..all of SPYDIES products areawesome..some may not fit your personality but theres lots to choose from..
They make tools to fit the situation..
Spyderco's are user tools..the ultimate in pocket size matter seperation...

David has worked out a nrew way to utilize the GUNTING in finger locks..it springs out so easily in actual usage its scary...
We'll be doing it at the Clearwater Seminar this weekend!..

David isn't doing the Pac Man technique again is he?

IMHO, the Gunting is (or will be)the GLOCK of the cutlery industry.
Superior design and execution with a commitment to training as evidenced by color coded, fully functional training versions of the "live" equipment.

I predict that LEO's and self defence minded citizens will make the Gunting a huge success.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for comparing it to the GLOCK..I can think of no higher praise than the GUNTING to be compared to a tool like the GLOCK...

hows that?????

Right on the money steve!
Let's see... I have been a die hard glock fan for many years now and own just about every model... The Gunting and Glock have lot's in common...
1) When the Glock first came out people called it UGLY.
I remeber reading on one of the threads a few people refer to the GUntting as ugly.
In my humble opion both are works of art.
2) Many people knocked the glocks very simple but effective safe action trigger, mostly because they could not understand it.
The compression lock on the Gunting seems just as simple and many people question it's purpose... Hopefully they wake up and smell the coffe... Because like the Glocks polymer frame, the GUntings compression lock is the wave of the future.
3) I personally have a recorded 8,000 rounds through MY G-19 6,000 rounds through my G-27 and Almost 6,000 rounds through my G-30 with NEVER a malfunction!!! People like Chuck Taylor have put the glock through hell and back and it just keeps working. The Gunting looks and feels the same way and I look forward to putting it through it's paces time and time again!
I could go on and on... If we could only get them in as many different variations as the Glock...HUM? I like mine so much I have changed my name from Glockaholic to Guntaholic...Thanks Bram!!!

My thoughts exactly.

Both also have great ergonomics and index well in hand. Pick a target, close your eyes and aim your (unloaded) Glock at the target. Open you eyes and the front sight is dead on.
Flip, twirl, open, close your Gunting and it's always oriented/indexed properly. Left handed, right handed, whatever, it just works.

Also, with a blue glock simunitions trainer and a red Gunting drone, you can add some color to your ensemble.

Gee...seems the gentleman in the Lock strength thread doesn't think there are any viable defensive folders in the SPYDERCO line up especially those using a compression lock...

so...remember...your GUNTING is not a viable self defense tool....ROFL..
so quit using it that way!!!!!!
That means you Guntaholic, Steve, Warrior woman....GOT IT!!!!???

My friends two year old just HAD to butter a Bagel with the Drone last night after I told her that was what it was for. It's funny to see a two year old with a Gunting (start 'em young). Did a good job with the buttering too.
Of course the ramp is simply a kick stand to display the Gunting on the shelf.
biggrin.gif

Thats pretty funny... Guess I'll have to start using my drone for it's intended purpose... A back scratcher!!! LOL

Gee guys, If you want a Miami seminar....uh duh...CHECK WITH ME!!!! You know where to find me. I have been batting around some advertising ideas with Tony just today about Promoting a Bram seminar in Miami Beach for a weekend seminar of fun in the sun. I do want a couple of months to get it together so that we have a good turn out for Bram.

Gee, according to someone on the lock strength thread we can't defend ourselves with the Gunting.

Anyone else care to respond to this obviously misinformed person?

Bram, do I have to follow you all over this forum to keep you from putting words in my mouth?

I think the Starmate, Military, and Chinook are very viable utility/defensive knives.
Adding the compression lock to them would probably make them better.(notice the use of utility along with defensive...just like my original post)

If you are going comment on one of my posts, at least get it right.

gee Anthony..I'm not putting words in your mouth..I'm RESPODING to your words...guess you better go to Community and see that the French have decided that one of the BEST utlity knives they found was the GUNTING..NEMO was really putting it through the paces while Fred Perrin used the DRONE...NEMO actually built wooden boxes with it!

Of course I see you don't think its a utility knife..and its not viable as a defensive tool..or a combination of both????

Why isn't it a utility knife?
it skins, it chops, it whittles wood, it cuts string, boxes.....
pulls soda tabs, works as a hammer.....
breaks glass, fillets fish.....

Ok you're right ITS NOT A UTILITY KNIFE!

I personally have handled the Gunting, but have not seen the video's or even a demonstration. The Gunting does certainly not have the look of "Utility". I can do all the utility applications you mentioned above with a Smatchet Bram, but let's not cloud the intensions or real applications of the Gunting. In reading all the threads concerning this knife, phrases like "Dependable street combat", "reach out, touch someone, and it opens", "Impact Tool", "Bio-Mech cutting", "Fastest to deploy on target", are just of few of the non utilitarian phrases to grace the Gunting.

Just curious Bram, are your vidieo's full of defensive applications or utilitarian uses for your knife?

I personally am confused with Spyderco's involvement w/the Gunting(at least offering it to the public). After holding back the Matriarch, the full production of the Gunting is very perplexing.

Compresion Lock is cool though.

Anthony..I hope you take some of this as tongue in cheek, teasing or just being devils advocate.. I really do appreciate that you look at things differently than I do,,
SID...I have no idea where you're coming from. Whats wrong with an MBC edged tool having utilitarian uses? a SMATCHET?? give me a freaking break...go ahead fillet a fish, do delicate cutting with it...you CAN'T...
and what does any of this have to do with SPYDERCO's involment?
There's an MBC line up..
My knife basically goes to LEO, Military and martial artists...so far most of the people I know who have it and been to my seminars fit that category..yes I know of a couple of exceptions...
I don't understand where you're trying to take your point...
SPYDERCO makes a knife..you don't agree with the way its done?
don't agree with the selling philosophy???
Don't agree with MBC..or the fact that other SPYDERCOs are generally not made for the public as well...????
You don't like that I personally make noise and that people become GUNTAHOLICS..ROFL!
my god, I'm making edged tool addicts! actually DRONE addicts!Oh my!....

My DRONE can be used by ANYONE...its not edged...as an MBc prercussive tool..I still check out who I sell it to...same with the GUNTING...

Again could you state your issue in other words..I missed your point...if you had one, i really did miss it..so bear with me and state it difffrently so it will sink in...OK????I'm an old guy.

By the way SID..whats the "look"of a utility knife? please advise me? Maybe I can package the "look"...
To me the GUNTING is a plain old knife..and to all of us that use it over time it looks pretty normal to them as well...
a common pocket knife as I've said many times...

Bram
No offense in my above thread, but come on. The Gunting a normal ol' pocket knife. It's pretty intimidating for the mainstream knife guy. Kinda extreme, when you throw in training on applied techniques on how to use it. As you even stated the Gunting is specialized.

As far as my Spydie involvement comment. Spyderco has stated in the past that the small(er) knife is where they see the legal future in our society, which I happen to agree with. Even as we speak many Spydie knives are currently illegal to carry in certain area's. They don't publish the Civillian, sell the Matriarch to LEO's only, so the Gunting seemed a little bold with the above said and done. IMHO, the Gunting is much more devestating looking than the Matriarch. Thats not a slam but an observation.

I applaude your enthusiasum for the product, but let's not get so defensive everytime someone brings to the table a not so Guntaholic attitude. My hope is you have success with the piece. I want to see your video some day, and even talk with you to hear you speak the passion you share on your product.

PEACE!

I think spyderco withholds distribution of the Civilian and Matriarch, because both are designed to be used by people who have little or no training. Especially the Matriarch, which is basically a 'budget version' of the Civilian. Because of its price it is readily available for people who have no training, making it particularly available to street gangs and such. While I feel knife enthusiasts should have better access to a knife like the Civilian and Matriarch, it is Spyderco's choice to market them 'politically correct'
The Gunting may look weird or even intimidating, like the Civilian/Matriarch. But it requires some or even a lot of training to use it as 'advertised', i.e. as an effective weapon. Also, the Gunting has the politically correct short blade length. Furthermore, the Gunting and Bram's biomechanical cutting are not designed to be lethal weapons. I know the Civilian/Matriarch was designed with this purpose in mind as well, but "people just don't believe you when you say that about a Civvie". I believe it is these aspects of the Gunting that make it a perfectly politically correct knife to market for Spyderco.

Sid,

My experience has been that a lot of non-knife people and even some anti-knife people really like the Gunting.

It's a quality knife with a small (2 7/8") CPM 440V (great steel) blade, very ergonomic (G-10) handle, improved clip (flat, snag resistant), great lock (rock solid), lanyard hole for working around water or snow, open design (easy cleaning), and the ramp acts as a control point for delicate cutting tasks. Actually a great utility blade.

Try one out. It will surprise you. I know I was surprised.
I also have used the ramp to pry open a few items. Something I would really hate to do with a blade tip.

The ramp also allows the user to open the knife with heavy gloves, or even mittens. A real plus.

Even if you are not interested in the defensive capablities of the knife, it still is a great piece of utilitarian equipment.

Steve
