well, not quite...it's not exactly my first spyderco - the sharpmaker is. it's amazing how such a simple product can work so well! along with a strop, i can easily make my knives shaving sharp.

...well, back on topic - the military black blade. i'm used to hard-use, survival knives such as beckers & esee knives so the bar has been set pretty high. almost all of my knives consist of those two makers only so that shows how careful i am. i leave the flavor-of-the-month knives to others. when it was time to branch out to folders my research concluded that the spyderco military fit the bill as a no nonsense, pure function over form, design. it was an easy decision :D thank you spyderco for coming out with the military.

...pics. my pet rose hair tarantula was nice enough to model for me:

next to my edc esee-4. the military will stay in my pocket while the esee-4 stays in my laptop bag along with my basic survival stuff:

her carapace has that nice pink hue to it since she just shed a couple of months ago. too bad i'm not a good photographer to capture it well:

uh, oh...the fangs are in full display! after i flipped the military open she seemingly took the hint and raised a couple of her front legs in a defensive posture:

the pics don't show it but her 1/2" long fangs are clearly visible

in summary:
- no blade wiggle in both folded and open positions.
- the blade is perfectly centered when closed.
- i like the g10's grip alot. not sure what the big deal with micarta is (with regards to fixed blade knives). g10 is not porous hence it doesn't absorb stinky sweat and oil, unlike micarta.

- cons? only a minor one - i wish the the screws/other hardware were anodized black. i took off the clip for maximum concealability since i work in a suit & tie kinda office so different positions were a non-issue.

in summary, this might be my one and only spyderco...unless the titanium military eventually comes in an all-black finish...hint, hint :D

congrats on your first Spydie [knife] and may there be many more!

Awesome turantula by the way!
Used to own one of the same species named Harry.

Nice knives and pics, do you find it a bit big? Just looks like a big knife to me. Anyway congrats on the knife :D

Congrats on the Millie. Absolutely, without a doubt, my favorite knife platform or all time. Very pretty T also. Rose Hairs are definitely cool.

The Military is a great knife but even though its name may make you think is a tough knife... well... it is not SO tough. The blade profile, while being a superb cutter (that is what I bought mine) has a thin pointy tip... that could very easily snap. There are a few threads here in Bladeforums about people breaking the tips. Even one who said he was just atempting to loosen a tiny plastic screw. Ok ok... we all know no knife should be used for that but you get the hint, don't you?

If you plan on doing unusual stuff with your folder maybe the saber grind Endura suits you better. You won't get G10. You won't get fancy SV30. It will probably be a not so great slicer. But you will get a bulletproof lockback with steel liners and a much stronger tip profile.

Enjoy it.

if the tarantula would of made contact with the edge of the blade, would that constitute animal cruelty? :p

thanks, guys!

yes, it's pretty big but it's also very light. it's easy to forget that it's in the pocket. the handle feels great in the hand even with gloves on. really nice ergonomics.

Now get busy wearing off that black coating.

holy! i'm going to have to open a lot of twinkies to match that wear

duly noted. without going into details it's main purpose will be an edc knife replacing my victorinox trekker. i encountered a situation recently where i'd like a more defensive oriented knife since concealed carry is not available here. the bushcraft stuff will still be reserved for my fixed blades.

then they would be blood brothers :D

That knife and tarantula of yours are "scary sharp" :P

honestly i'd rather cut myself with the millie than get bit by those fangs! they're pretty massive.

Now that has to be the best looking knife model I have seen thus far! :D

Awesome pics. Congrats on the Military.

Which reminds me... This was my Chilean Rose, beautiful creature.
Of course I named it Mili.

Agreed, I also love the military!

nice! i'm saving these pics as proof i'm not the only weirdo who plays with spideys - both kinds :p

Dudes, this is cracking me up :) 3 guys with big spiders and big knives in one post, awesome!!!

And you guys thought I was crazy for showing this....

I guess there is just something about Millies and big arachnids.

I remember, that's the one you found right?

That one looks like it would bite, and just plain looks freaky to me!

The Chilean's are rather laid back and it takes quite a bit to get them to bite.

Another cool pic that's for sure!
