Hi all! Newb to knife collecting here. As the title states, I'm looking to buy my first Spyderco at some point, but I'm kind of overwhelmed all by the choices. I'm looking for an EDC, under 3.5-inch blade, nice grippy black handle, etc. Thanks!

Paramilitary and Manix are great options. For a first knife at a lower price point the Delica or Endura are very hard to beat! The Delica is just under 3" and the Endura is just over 3.5".

What Surfgringo said.

PM and Endura larger
Manix and Delica smaller

Delica and Endura lower-priced

Enjoy your selection, JT.

BTW the Jackie Treehorn house in TBL (Sheats Goldstein Residence) is one of John Lautner's architectural treasures

I'm relatively new to Spyderco myself so my opinion is less educated than many others here .
My suggestion would be to get a Delica first .
The reality of it is that it probably won't be your first and last Spyderco , so start basic and go from there .
I now own 8 Spyderco's and even though I have some more expensive and flasher Spyderco's now the Delica is the foundation on which my small Spyderco collection is based on ( 3 of my 8 are Delica's )
Early on I decided I wanted to get a small , middle sized and large so that I had every situation covered , and I'm now at a point that I'm happy and satisfied .
Truth be told the Delica is all that I need , but hey I'm only human .

The Delica is a great first choice, but be forwarned, once the spider bites not even Peter Parker can save you. :)

:mad:my 1st was the tenacious, after that came 1 or 2 every month! so be warned' hide you wallet some place..

Budget: Persistence; excellent starter knife.

But I think what you really need is the Sage 1. A 3 inch leaf blade of S30V and the smoothest out of the box action. You'll love it, I swear!

My first was the Blue Domino, and I was hooked. Good looking, smooth as butter, solid action and lockup. Dang it, I should have started lower and may not have gone on a buying spree.

I think you should start with a Delica at just a tad under 3" (or an Endura at 3.8"). The Delica is a good all around knife and has bidirectional texturing. It is "grippy", very much so, but will not tear up your clothes. Also, the Delica is only around $58 and the Endura around $62 or so.

Do you mean "collecting" as in buying a knife that will sit in a safe, or do you plan to actually carry and use it?

Any of the choices listed here would be excellent first Spydercos as users, as for being true "collectibles," not so much.

I think that you would best be served by finding a Brick and Mortar Spyderco dealer and putting your hands on some. You'll know when you find the one that's right for you--to get things started.

It's not uncommon for your tastes to change. I got a Dragonfly and was really impressed with it, so I picked up a Delica. I loved the Delica, and it kicked a lot of other knives out of my pocket. That wasn't the plan, but that's how it's gone. I saw people here just rave about the PM2, but I thought it was a tad big for my use. Well, a finally got a PM2, and yes, I love it as well. It's more a weekend/outdoors/heavy use knife for me. The Delica spends a lot of time in my pocket during the week. It's never caused anybody to look twice when I take it out and use it, and it's more than up to the tasks I need for the work week.

So enjoy the hunt, it's more than half the fun, and for many people here it never really ends. Once you find a knife you like--then you can consider getting into the Sprint Runs, and that's when the true "collecting" side of this starts. To get to that point, you're best served finding a model--or models-- you really like.

There are so many right answers to your question. Any of the "main" knives are going to probably do what you need: Dragonfly, Delica, Endura, Paramilitary/Manix. If you're looking for something a little more "gentlemen's" or "office" or just absurdly thin in the pocket, I love my Chaparral, but be sure to get the carbon fiber handle scales for the black look you want.

The Delica and Endura are Spyderco's top sellers and for good reason.

If you have large-ish hands, you'll probably prefer to EDC the Endura, Manix2, and Paramilitary2.

Otherwise, you'll probably prefer the Delica, Native, or Manix2.

What's great is that there is no "wrong" choice here.

Thanks for all the recommendations! The Delica is looking great right now, but I'm definitely going to check out the others as well.

Great call, delica is a must own no matter what direction you decide to head in afterwards.

Maybe a PM2 a bit down the road. It absolutely lives up to the hype.

I heard you treat objects like women man.

Some great recommendations here. I just picked up a Persistence because I wanted a blade shorter than 3", but I am looking at either a Native or Chaparral next.
