and my last. Byrd Cara Cara 2. What I ordered was the non-serrated version. What I received is the partially serrated version. I hate serrated blades.
No, it is not the knife's fault they sent the wrong one.
Why is it the last Spyderco I'll buy? I do not like the way it feels in my hand. I do not like the tip up right side carry clip position. The clip is in the way. Yes, I could try moving the clip for tip down carry, or remove the clip altogether, but why bother? The partially serrated blade is a deal killer for me; I will never carry or use it.
I'll gift it to a co-worker, I guess.
More power to those who like Spyderco, and how they fit the hand. Spyderco is just not for me.

Hi afishhunter,

Thanx much for sharing your thoughts. Perhaps in the future, you'l have a change of mind.

Seems a little silly after one Byrd knife to dismiss Spyderco's entire line of knives. To each their own. My first Boker I hated but looked into other models and now they are probably my second favorite brand after Spyderco.

I would recommend stopping in a good store and handling a few different models before dismissing all of them, but it does take all kinds. I'm not at all a fan of combo edges, but I think the Cara Cara 2 is nearly unbeatable for a budget modern folder.

The G-10 Cara Cara is a whole different animal in the hand, and so is the Endura vs the FRN Cara Cara.

They do feel substantially different than a typical Benchmade, my other favorite.

I know what you mean. That's usually what I say when I'm handling some brand other than a Spyderco.

You may just run across a spydie you lIke one day.

You can't seriously think the ergonomics of one knife would be representative of the whole catalogue, do you? For example, if you ordered a Coke, received a Diet Coke (I hate diet soda), does that mean swearing off Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Mello Yellow, Pibb, Barq's, Hi-C...

I loathe diet soda.

In answer to your question, I may be mistaken, but the handle of the Cara Cara 2 is the same shape as all the other Spyderco models. It therefore stands to reason, they would all have the same ergonomics. I do have a couple other "modern" folders, albeit none as expensive as this Cara Cara2 (I paid something like $20 for it) and I am not so fond of their ergonomics, either.

I might try a RAT 1 some day, or maybe I 'll just stick with the Schrade Old Timer 6OT/7OT Uncle Henry LB7, and Buck 110. I like how they fit in the hand, and the fact that they have a bit of heft to them. I don't mind the belt holster carry, at least I don't have to worry about the knife falling out of my pocket. I quit carrying my Leatherman, because the pocket clip did not keep it in my pocket, or even behind my belt.

I hate soda, period; so I won't drink any, of any brand. Yeah I think you need to stick to your Buck 110 in a leather holster or something similar; assuming you're driving that truck all day long it's got to be uncomfortable to have a knife in your pocket, the more since you like knives with some heft to them; all that said, Spyderco still has some of the best ergos in the business, try to stop by a store someday in your travels and handle a few of them, I think you would be surprised at some of their models; like the Manix 2 XL, of course that is no 20 dollar blade though, it is more like 95 or more; they also have some fixed blades with holsters that could fit your needs; you could even carry one of those big Manix 2's in a holster, you would have to hunt for one, or just make one yourself if you are handy with tools.

As for the Leatherman, the only experience I have with any of those, is that they have always come with a holster, and that would be my preferred carry method for a multitool of that nature, maybe try one with a holster also?

I'm not trying to argue with you or convince you of anything, just trying to help you find something you can use and would fit your needs and lifestyle; some people just don't like knives with a pocket clip, or knives that are big, or small, or thick or thin, light or heavy, etc. but I am convinced, as many are here, that you can find a Spyderco that would impress you, since not all their knives share the same ergonomics. All that being said, there is nothing wrong with a Buck 110 in a leather holster, I used one for years at work and I loved it, until I started using Spyderco knives, now it sits in the tool box with its nice polished brass bolsters in its nice leather sheath:)

Frn on the Byrd series has great traction but doesn't feel nearly good as the regular line. To each their own though.

Have you no respect?
That's Mr. Pibb. ;)

I must admit, my first Spyderco (Stretch) was shocking ugly. Spyderco is a different brand than most, and not simply because they just want to be different. They are different because they are original. The originality, for me, did not sink in until the shock of the fugly aesthetics wore off. The Stretch, in combo-edge, is my EDC.

So, like Sal hints, perhaps as time goes by, the mindset will change, hopefully for the better. :)

@OP, if I had pick just one reason to choose Spyderco (aside from Sal & crew), it would be edge thickness. Spyderco knows that thin cuts. Very few brands adhere to this rule, especially in this time of insanely overbuilt folders. As much as I liked my Other Brand $400 folder, it did not cut.

after seeing what you're used to carrying, I'm not entirely surprised that you didn't take to the Cara Cara (or possibly other Spyderco knives). I sometimes carry a GEC, Northwoods, or good ol' Victorinox, and it's a totally different world than modern folding knives in terms of ergos, size, weight, design ... at least you gave it a shot! I think if you gave a bunch of Spyderco-carrying folks a traditional for the first time, it'd take a whole lot of getting used to a plenty of em just wouldn't like it. There's some people that can appreciate both modern and traditional, and then there's folks that swear by traditionals only. At least everyone's contributing something to the knife industry, the more choices the better.

heh, yeah, took me a looooong time to come around to deciding to purchase a Stretch, even though I knew it was a blade size and geometry that I'd use a lot.

I wasn't trying to turn this into a soda thread, just an analogy, I apologize if I derailed it.

Part of the fun of knives (and life, really) is trying new things, seeing what you like and dislike. I hope your next blade hits the sweet spot for you.

I've got a few Spydercos (PPT, PM2, Karahawk, Terzuloa SLIPIT, Vallotton, Caspian Salt 2...it seems like I'm forgetting something). The blade/handle shapes and ergonomics of each of these is vastly different. Every one of them even uses a different locking mechanism to some degree. If the Spyderco logo was removed and you showed them to someone with no prior knowledge of the knives it might be hard to guess they were all made by the same company.

You were never into Spydercos and now report that you still aren't after trying their $20 model that came with the wrong grind. Everyone is different, sounds like nobody loses (not you, us, or Spyderco) if you never buy another Byrd.

for me its the spyderco harpy, its been a hunt for the plain edge, but my first one was serrated then a member sold me their plain edge. Someone offered the gift me theirs, very nice of them. Hope Sal considers bringing that back. plain edge and in stainless. Wanted them ever since i saw Hannibal. of course theres been discussion that it is the SE and not the PE. but thats really the only spyderco I wanted. Got some tasmans but they are not the same

What i don't understand, you ordered a NON serrated and received one with serrated blade?is it so difficult to send it back, and get the one you ordered?the shop keeper/owner should do the return shipping /without cost on youre part, that's what i call SERVICE.
