Recommendation? My first spyderco

Finally I just discovered I can capture this patina in low light . . . so
Anyone considering M4 . . . this is what you are in for.
I like it fine and am not in the least disappointed. Let ‘er change I say.

PS: I washed the brand new blade with dish soap, cut the avocado, then I diced up some roasted whole chillies then a couple slices of lemon (this morning an apple). That's it so far.
Nice color change huh ? With some tomato slicing I bet I can get some shades of blue in there.

PS: FrogLube : What does that taste like ? Like licking a frog I'll bet. AuhhhDnO

OK using one’s thumb to release the lock and close the knife like this

There is a sculpted area in the adjacent liner that lets you get in there shown here where the glint is

and shown here

The way one has to do this is you have to push on the liner lock with your thumb nail. Keep in mind there is a way to do this with your index finger where you don’t need to use your finger nail but just your finger tip . . . shown later on bellow in the second series of photos.

For now this is a progression of photos showing the thumb method

Problem is it causes damage to your finger nail and fatigue to your thumb fairly quickly

THE SECOND PROGRESSION
Using your index finger
I am triggering the liner lock with my index finger; pinching sort of the way one does a compression lock like on the Para 2

using the pad on your index finger, not the nail, pinch until the blade drops

then flip the handle over so the blade is up. Move your fingers out of the path of the blade though . . .

No finger nail damage and is easier to do.

The GB1 is great. It's not a toy to open and close nonstop though due to the thick liner. The action on mine is smooth, no blade play, it's easy to sharpen and it holds its edge well. Corrosion is a potential issue.

I have both GBs, with custom Cocobolo scales. On both knives, I slightly relieved the metal liners at the liner lock, just flush to the handle scales, literally 1/16" of an inch. You won't believe how much easier it is to open both knives now. (You can barely see this in the photo below)

Thanks for everyone's responses. I ended up picking up a Gayle Bradley 2 because of how much cheaper it was, plus I don't have a knife in M4. It fits quite nicely with my collection.

If you're right handed and don't like lockbacks, I'd probably recommend the Para Military 2. edit: Nevermind

Get the Gayle Bradley 2 if you can clean and lube the blade periodically to prevent corrosion. Really better steel and great fit and finish for less than half the price. Also the handles give better grip than metal handles.

Posted this before I got to the end of the story. Enjoy your knife.

Surprisingly, I have not bought a Spyderco yet. The Spydiehole looked way too wonky for me. Though there are two that I am really warming up to.

The Spyderco Slyzs Bowie and the Gayle Bradley 2 are looking really awesome or even the discontinued Gayle Bradley Air. I live in the midwest and it is pretty humid out here, though I do have a supply of frog lube to help with rust.

I am not really interested in the paramilitary series and I am not too interested in lock-backs.

I already have a CRKs, some CKF knives, a benchmade balisong, and an Olamic 247. What would you guys recommend as a first spyderco knife to buy for me?

This is a Gayle Bradley 2. Amongst other things, there is a bigger recess to access the lock. Blade has been cerakoated. The edge is polished to a mirror. If you want more details, just let me know.

One of my faves is the Sage 2...nice solid titanium slabs and S30V blade.
I just sold two Slysz Bowies. Keep in mind that I really just buy and sell, as I only carry one EDC and it's a CRK large Sebbie. The Spyderco Air is NOT a contender unless you want a knife to carry in your watch-pocket. It's NOT for heavy work at all, but is a nice knife with great steel.
The Gayle Bradley 2 is nice...better ergos than the first model, IMO. Both have great CPM-M4.
I would reco that you look at the Sage 2, the GB2 and skip the larger, heavier models like the Millie, the PM2 and Slysz Bowie. Sure, I think that the Slysz Bowie is one of Spyderco's best products, but since you already have a CRK and an Olamic 247, your heavy-duty needs are already met.

A superb user thst doesn't make sense on paper is the Milli. Probably one of the best slim pocket able big knives on the market.

The slysz Bowie and gb2 are both exceptional knives. I think right now the gb2 is the best value money and material wise out of any knife on the market at the moment. You should also try a Military..

I have to agree with both of these guys. The Military is a serious user that performs amazingly. Its my #1 all time favorite folder and my EDC.

If I had to pick between the GB and the Bowie it would be the bowie for sure. Its a nice looking blade and seems to be a very well made tool. Plus it has a full flat grind and I love the stonewash. I dont have one, but of I buy a Taichung Spyderco the bowie would be the 1st choice.
