My first spyderco

Caly3 is awesome. The new M4 Manix2 is going to be as well if you like something bigger/stronger, mine should arrive this Saturday. As your first Spyderco, I think the Manix2 or GB2 might be slightly more impressive than the humble Caly3 IMO.

I'm in agreement with abba, the M4 Manix is gonna be one tough blade to beat. Hell, I may go as far to say that it very well could be one of the best "bang for you buck" knives to date! M4, G10, CBBLock, for under $150. That's one helluva deal. With what you're after I think it should be at the top of your list.

My CruWear Manix 2 is my absolute favorite knife. The Manix 2's ergonomics are the best I've hand to date, and the blade shape really lends itself to be an incredible slicer. I managed to cut myself like 3-5 times within the first 24 hours of receiving the knife(user error for sure, haha).

If you are after slicers over 3" blade, I would suggest Gayle Bradley2, Stretch, or Spydiechef.
They are either hollow ground or flat ground from thin stock.
Of course, Delica would probably outperform them, though.

I don't think PM2 and Manix2 are good slicers, while they are good solid knives.

I’m curious, miso2, what are you slicing for which the PM2 would be inadequate? I’ve used one to accomplish some extremely thin slices of food materials which exceeded the depth of the blade from spine to edge.

The BladeHQ exclusive Manix2 CPM-M4 Satin Blade Natural G-10 (USA) is out.

Hint, hint!

Available in DLC coating also and that one is a sexy bitch!!

I like the idea of the manix 2, have edc'ed a contego for about a year so I am familiar with m4 and the locking mechanism

I will never say PM2 is inadequate.

Compared to the ones I listed and think good slicers, the blade stock and/or the edge are thicker.
Making thin slices is not a problem because the material would curl away from the blade.

I once tried to cut a cucumber and a potato in half with PM2, but they just broke up in the middle.
Spydiechef did a lot better, if not great.

Of course, it may not be relevant because I would not use PM2 for food prep.

Thanks for your answer, which is very fair. I would venture that a PM2 can slice either the fruit or veg you mention specifically to exquisite thinness, given experience, but on a vertical, mechanical slice, I concede that other blades would be superior.

I should say that I would not recommend a folder for food prep in a properly equipped kitchen. But for camping? Oh yes. It can do a lot of other stuff too, and I am not a Spyderco nut, it’s the only one I own! :)

The Manix is a solid knife. One of the best hand fillers, just great grip for working. I prefer it to my PM2.

For pure slicing capability, i highly recommend the spyderco sage 3. Its blade is slightly taller and slightly longer. It is an incredible slicer. I think the different dimensions on the sage 3 may make it the best slicer of the sage series. It is in s30v though.

Totally agree with all this. I got my M4 Manix today, and I must say, it really is a contender for best bang for your buck out there. The fit and finish on this one is even slightly better than my Cruwear Manix (I mean, barely, but maybe). If anyone is on the fence about this one, buy it. It ain't gonna go down in value. One of those rare cases where that's actually true.

Once you start with Spyderco you will probably not look at BM the same way, again. It was that way for me and many others. BM was our gateway to Spyderco.
How TRUE that is! I've had some nice Benchmades, but I've owned many, many, many Spydies for every ONE Benchmade. I buy/sell/trade, and my Spyderco collecting days are long gone, so keep very few on hand any more...
I just don't think there is anything on the market that gives you better value per dollar. YMMV, and I understand this.

Nothing can beat the fit and finish of the CruWear/carbon fiber Manix! Haha, no I can actually believe that.

Spyderco has stepped up their already unbelievable game even more the past few years. Plus they listen to their customers, which is more than some others can say, haha.

Especially since BM upped their prices.

So it sounds like the manix 2 m4 bhq has would be a good intro into the spydie world!

I think it's between the BHQ exclusive MANIX 2, mantra 2, or the caly 3( just because of the hap40, not sure how it stacks up to m4 though)

I have several Spydercos and my fav (& newest) one is the Fluted CF S90V Native 5. The machining is fantastic, the knife is overall exceptionally designed & the materials are stellar. I could easily see a linerless Jade G10 Native 5 In M4 popping up eventually.

I didn’t mean to make it seem like m4 isn’t a good steel—in fact, it’s probably my favorite all around. I’m sure someone who is better at sharpening could get it to whatever level of sharpness you could want to get. But if I were personally getting a knife to play around with how sharp I could get it, I think I’d get something with a bit finer grain structure and fewer hard carbides. That’s just my opinion though
