Howdy all,
The pieces for this sword have been laying around for over a year now, (I actually started working on it 2 years ago) and yesterday I finally got tired of looking at them. So last night and today, I worked on it and got it finished. (No, this wasn't for a customer. :D) The blade steel is 5160, the guard was forged from 1" re-bar, hardened to 45 RC. I don't know what the wood is, but I like it. :) The pommel is mild steel. It's the part that was left over when I used a hole saw on another project. The blade is just over 20" long, overall length is 28".
The pommel and guard have been heat colored.

Thanks for looking,
Phillip

If that is your first sword, I cant wait to see your tenth one.

Very beautiful.

Nice sword, for your first one.

The handle looks like ossage orange or ( hedge ) To me.

Thanks guys!
The handle is definitely not Osage. I forgot to mention I dyed the handle. The wood was very light colored, and not real hard. I think it might be ash or maple.
But your right, the handle does look a lot like Osage Orange. :-)

Holly crap, the blade looks outstanding, that must have been allot of work to get it made.

Nice first sword! I have seen that wood before, it's a hardwood: maybe a maple or birch, not sure. I will try to find out.

Did you make a functional sword, are you running around cutting up old pumpkins and stuff?

Wow man very nice, I really like that. Like everyone said if thats your first sword I cant wait to see your next ones.

I think your first sword is supposed to suck.... that is AMAZING!!!! and most definatley doesn't suck. WOW!!!!!

Pumpkins! Good idea. I was wondering what I could use this sword for.
Yes, I intend to use it. :D

WOw! This is a beauty! You got be joking me by telling this is your first sword;)

Forged? How'd you HT that badboy?

It was a little hairy, but not too bad. My gas forge has a front and back door, so I moed the sword in and out, checking it with a magnet once in a while, until it was as close as I could get it to being the same temp all over. I probably won't be doing any longer swords until I build a sword forge, like Don Fogg has. :)

For tempering, I used my Evenheat oven, which is 22" deep. I couldn't shut the door, so I plugged the opening with Kaowool, and tempered it one half at a time. :D

YOu said the pamal was from a hole saw. i have been looking for a hole saw that can cut through 1/8 - 1/4 O1. what kind of hole saw was it. the bi-metal or a carbide ?.

It was a regular hole saw, probably bi-metal. If your using annealed O1, it shouldn't be a problem. In fact, it would probably be easier, since mild steel is kind of hard to work with...
