I'm taking your advice and trying a few new things other than old files and 01. I'm getting ready to do my first 440C and D2 projects and Ill send them out for heat treating. Is there anything different I do with these metals compared to what I've been grinding, or is all the "magic" in the HT?

Also, Is there anyone in Maine that does heat treating? I'm not opposed to shipping them, but I would love to learn from someone local.

Much thanks!

In stainless steels, you can take the finish to a finer degree than carbon steel. Take the edge down to .010-.015" and take the finish to at least 400 grit.

IMPORTANT:
Get every deep scratch and defect removed before HT. They will be very difficult to get out once hardened.
