My first traditional - GEC 77 Red Sawcut w/ Brass pins and liners

If I recall correctly the 77 you have is a bit unique because it was not supposed to have brass liners/pins.

Aye - it's "collectible", but it's too pretty to -not- carry and use it. I really like the contrast with the brass, and how it works so well with the red bone. Absolutely love the little thing.

I think I'm going to do that pocket-stitch mod sometime soon. Also, this will allow me to easily carry my Espada and have a much less terrifying secondary (realistically, primary) knife in my other pocket. Everything about this is great. I even just sold basically everything I don't actively carry anymore, which means I can (1) buy my parents a nice couples retreat package for Christmas and (2) buy more traditionals! I'm going to hold off a bit on 2, though... I already have 6 in total incoming, so, I'll have some necessary deliberations to go through before I start going crazy (again).

Are there any resources, newsletters, or dealers I should be watching? Knivesshipfree is agiven, and I've already signed up for the newsletter - along with northwestknives. GPknives seems to keep respectable stock as well, and I was already on their mailing list.

Excellent knives. I too like the brass liners. I've commented before about them. I like them on dark woods and bone. Set the knife off nicely.

Congrats on your Barlow. I need one just like it. Absolutely awesome.

Btw, beer scout needs to be your next!

Go to collectorknives.net and preorder an 85 before they are sold out. You might want to take a look at ordering a 47 viper too.

Nice lookin knives. They look better after you use them, though.

No kidding. After telling myself I was done until I could spend some time inspecting and deliberating my purchases... I went ahead and picked up a 68 White Owl Northfield Clip Point in primitive bone.

And now I'm looking for a #12 Templar NIT, but, I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon...
...This is way too fun.

Congrats on the 77 et al. The 77 is totally beautiful, great score! I've looked at that exact white owl a couple of times - nice pickup there, too.

In regard to the tarnish/patina conversation, one thing to keep in mind is that the patina will nicely hide scratches on the blade... I *hated* getting scratches on my modern knife blades. it just drives me crazy. If you have that particular form of OCD a patina will completely fix that for you. The last Case knife I bought with carbon steel I received came with unbearably, really ridiculously thick grinds, so I just laid it flat on a piece of 400grit sand paper and re-profiled it to where I wanted. It looked horrible, like a motorcycle after an accident on the freeway, but after cutting up a few apples and oranges you can't even tell I did it.

And, to spend a little bit more of your money - I just picked up a #71 bull nose... I looped some paracord through the lanyard hole and hung it from a suspension clip on the edge of my pocket. Carries like a modern, works like a traditional. If you're still interested in bigger traditional, the #21 bull buster is still hanging out on some store shelves and would be awesome carried this way. I hate big knives laying in the bottom of my pocket, but I have no problems with 4"+ bladed tacticals on a pocket clip. This seems like the best of both worlds...

Welcome. I have to admit I'm not usually a fan of brass with bone covers when they are super dark and or black. I have an old red sheep in all steel as I like the black and white look of the all steel construction. That being said, your 77 in brass has made me rethink this. That brass is sooo warm and classy. Perhaps I will keep an eye open for one in the future. I know there aren't many around. Good score!

"dings and patina" are hopefully going to be dodged by religious use of a slipsheath and my immediate application of Tuff Glide on all surfaces. No tarnished brass on this lil' guy :D

I don't like patina or dull brass either...shiny is good :) I didn't have much luck with TuffGlide. A thin coat of oil works for storage, but during use, Renaissance Wax works the best. I shine it up with Flitz, then put two lite coats of Ren wax, buff and it stays shiny pretty good.
