My First Traditional Purchase

I don't have it yet, but here is the general image. I just ordered it. I sold some of my larger modern knives lately because i am searching for a new job and i suspect that it will involve a lot more dress pants. Dress pants and g10 don't really go well together most of the time. I acquired a few modern gents folders like the Spyderco Air and a Micro Dyad in Black Pearl. I saw A thread on a Purple Haze Jr Stockman. It's wasn't quite me but when i saw the Wharncliff blade I had to have it. So i have journeyed to the other side as well :)

Very nice, neffarious! I too jumped into the traditional folders end of the pool this year by picking up a Mini Copperlock (amber bone) at a local hardware store. I liked it so much that I immediately ordered two more (white synth. and blue bone) from one of the more popular web retailers - just received them last week:

I am excited to get it. Traditionals are perceived differently. My GF's dad carries a 4 inch buck 110 every day and it doesn't phase her in the slightest when he pulls it out, but I pull out my BM 707 Sequel (sub 3 inch blade) or even my Spyderco Air and its scary because the blade is opened with one hand. I think she actually gave him the knife for Christmas IIRC. LOL @ that.

Looks like there are a few of us recently that started to make the transition to traditional styled knives. The bug hit me a few weeks ago and I have been on a massive obsession kick ever since. So far I have picked up

Case White Pearl Corelon Trapper
Case Black Synthetic Sod buster JR
Buck 110 in Brass Bolsters & Rose Wood
Buck Solo in Natural Wood Scales
GEC #15 Tidioute in Saw Cut Saddle Brown Jig Bone - Spey Blade
and a few other random cheap buck knives... (trappers and toothpicks)

Hopefully you can control yourself better then I can....

Anyways, welcome to the traditional side of knives brother. Hope your journey goes well!

Yea I am trying to control it. Most are more reasonably priced so its harder to say no. I am carrying a Spyderco today tho. Need the clip for the basketball shorts. Knife falling out of pocket is bad juju.

Ok, so the Case Mini Copperlocks are "nice," but I wanted to step it up a little bit... I've been checking out GEC, and I decided to order one for my second traditional folder purchase. Problem was that I couldn't decide between these two, so I ordered both:

Tidioute Cody Scout Jack, model 725213J in black canvas micarta:

AND

Tidioute Cody Scout Jack, model 725213J in black linen micarta:

I guess this is how it starts!!

They look identical.

Yes, they do. But the canvas has more texture, and the linen is smoother. Sorry, didn't mean to hi-jack your thread - I was excited and just had to post them somewhere and remembered your thread.

Best regards,

Derek...

Hey no worries. I thought you posted the same picture twice on accident. Its very nice BTW.

That's a nice choice you made with your Mini Copperlock. They haven't made the Wharncliffe version of that one in a while, so you got an instant classic there. I'm a fan of the Mini Copperlock pattern myself. I have two in the regular clip blade style. Post some pics when you get it. I'd be interested to see what that purple looks like in real life.

Ok, so I received my #72's today - a day ahead of schedule - bonus! These are really sweet pieces - the difference in quality between these and the Case models (pictured above) that I picked up at the local hardware store is like night and day. Lock-up is super solid and, as expected, the fit and finish is superb. I have to figure out how to get my iPhone camera to focus better because these pics do NOT do the knives justice:

The stock pics of the canvas vs. linen Micarta make the covers look almost the same, but, in person, there is little comparison (took these pics in direct sunlight so you can see the difference - canvas is on top, linen on bottom):

Good looking Scout, Derek. I recently picked up a GEC Northfield in stag and am loving it.

Neffarious, that's a nice looking Wharncliff. Have you received it yet?

You are spot on about traditionals being more reasonably priced making it harder to control. I just got into this and have already picked up more knives in under a month than I bought in all of 2013. I'm quickly learning that discipline and a buying strategy are more needed here than with modern folders.

The other problem with traditionals is that older models are still (and often) highly desirable. And that doesn't just apply to "vintage". Even knives from two or three years ago might be appealing if we missed them at the time. That is rarely the case in the modern folder arena where we tend to always want this year's latest-and-greatest model, and where older models tend to only be collected by serious fanboys.

OK so i got it today. Its Really big. Like 4 1/4 inches closed kinda big. WAY bigger than i expected.

So I don't know what I want to do. I can return it, and based on it's size, I think I might. I got a peanut in Purple Corelon and a blue jigged bone Swayback, which are the size i am looking for (3 inches give or take). It is a beautiful knife, but as i said, too big for me. Its the length of my Benchmade SN300-1 or Eros 1, and heavier than the Eros to boot.

Yeah I wasn't sure they made mini copperlocks in wharncliffe. I have edc'ed a full size copperlock in my back pocket (sometimes with a Vic Cadet or other smaller knife in front pocket), for more than a year. It's slim and that kind of makes up for the length.

Yep - 4-1/4" is the full-sized version. Regardless, it's a very nice looking knife - I especially dig the shield.

I just got into traditionals also. These are new scores at 3". I'm pretty happy with the way they fit in pocket and in hand. I think you're right, though, over 4" would be pretty large in pocket! However still a sharp looking knife :-)
