My First Traditional Purchase

You have certainly picked some fine knives to begin your journey into Traditionals; I find 3-3/8" up to 3-7/8" to be right for "drop in the front pocket" carry - any longer, bigger, heavier I want a belt sheath. OH

While it's based on need and personal preference, I like a larger knife--at least 3.5" closed and preferably 3.75-4.00" or even larger. Mainly because of the size of the grip, not the blade length. Handling smaller knives is awkward for me (born with big hands that are clumsy and getting worse as I age). Despite the Peanut devotees here, I'm too uncoordinated to even consider owning one. I've nicked my fingers more than I care to admit with the smallest blades on even medium sized folders.

It depends on your pants style and the size of the pocket but 4.25" is not impossible to carry comfortably. I regularly rotate carrying a 4" Queen Congress or a full-size Case Trapper or a Stockman as well as smaller knives. That Copperlock is a pretty knife but I can see returning it if it will not meet your requirements.

OK so i got it today. Its Really big. Like 4 1/4 inches closed kinda big. WAY bigger than i expected.

I, too, have fallen in love with traditionals, especially Wharncliffes. My first two are a GEC Tidioute #55 (3-1/2” slipjoint with liner lock) and a GEC Northfield #72 (3-7/8” lockback). Check out those two if you’re looking for a smaller single-blade Wharncliffe with a locking feature.

Regarding your Copperlock, how about a mini-review? The coloration on yours looks much better compared with the pasty stock image. What about fit & finish, blade play (a small gripe with my GEC #72), lockup, etc.

No play , slightly favors one side. The color is freaking gorgeous. I need to find one of this color as a smaller version. I am thinking the Jr Sod buster, but we'll see. Its a new color so i can figure it out in time. Its like a deep purple. The pictures are pretty close, if not spot on. Fit and finish is very nice, although i am not sure exactly what to expect as i have never bought a Case before. Its in par with a Spyderco Kiwi jigged bone I had. Similarly pinned knife, similar blade shape, huge size difference.

Thanks for the heads up on the GEC, but its more than i want to spring for at the moment for a single knife.

Thanks for the info, neffarious. One final question: what is the approx. blade length of your Copperlock Wharncliffe? (For whatever reason, it seems like the traditional manufacturers are stingy with spec items other than handle length.)

beautiful knife! Ill have to get one! ive got a full sized cooperlock that I carry from time to time, definitely one of my favorite knives, their real slim so i hardly notice it at all in my pocket and im not 20 stone weight! did it come with the little suede pouch? I keep mine in the pouch and it keeps everything scratch and lint free

Nope no pouch. I need to get a set of small and Med ones. Too bad the case ones only come in sets of 5. I just want one or two each.

Did you ever return your knife, neffarious? I just picked one up and have the same, exact comments as you--they must have shipped yours to me! I wasn’t really looking for a purple knife, but I just had to have it for my traditional single-blade wharnie collection.

Unlike the washed-out stock image in Case's product guide, here’s what this beauty really looks like in natural light:

I did return mine. Did you get a free shirt with it :) ? So I got 4 traditionals, sort of. Two are Kershaw, Two are Case. Wharnie Swayback Jack in Blue Jigged Bone. Purple Passion Peanut, Damascus Double cross in VG-10 and micarta and a aus-6 vintage Japanses Gents folder, also bu Kershaw.

No free shirt for me, LOL...I got my purple Copperlock from a different online vendor.

I really like your Case swayback wharnie. How strong is the pull? Any fit/finish issues?
