ok so here goes nothing. this weekend I think I'm going to fire up the grinder and make sum sparks and dust (and mabye even a knife lol )

here's my idea/design please let me know what u all think. be honest, brutaly honest if need be . please please pull no punches. I'm a big boy I can it and will heed all reccomendations.

design is loosly based on my brother in law's k-bar I always liked how the blade was at such an angle from the handle

my design hasnt got quite the angle as his k-bar but I like it
blade will be about 4.5" handle around 4" thanks in advance for any input

I like the design. but are you really planning on grinding that out? Knives like that take forever to profile if you don't have any cutting tools. I can't see making a knife like that without a bandsaw. I really do like the design, but perhaps try something a little easier if it's your first go.

Start out with you're peice of metal, and a sharpie. The less metal you have to grind off the easier it gets, and trust me, what you have there is not easy.

I personally like the design, are you going to do a flat grind or hollow grind on the blade? What are the dimentions? blade length and handle length? Now this is just me but the knife looks like quite a brute and I ( me personally ) would use less pins but thicker pins to compliment that look! Just my two cents!!!

Sorry I did not look far enough to see you already had the dimentions there! But in that case another 1/2' on the handle might be a lot more comfortable, since the knife has such a curve to it!

my grinder is a 10" contact wheel so hollow grind. I was kinda thinking the same about the thicker pins but all I have is small pins or lanyard tube... mabye 3 tubes instead of pins?? ? :thumbdn: ?

I like it. Seems like a cool design, though as mentioned earlier, you will need to start with some fairly wide stock and remove a lot of steel if you are not forging. Good luck. I'd be interest in seeing some progress photos throughout the project.

my stock is quarter inch X two inch 440c I drew the design within a two inch X 9 inch rectangle so it`ll fit ;) I`ll try to get some WIP pix for all u guys

To borrow a phrase: Shadows and dust..gladiator...er..uh...Sparks and dust...

HEHE...nevermind. Just get going on it. It looks good. Make it into reality. I will do the same on my latest work. Mine has taken a couple of different shapes so far. No matter. l will make a knife soon and then a better one later. Your drawing is great. Get it into the 3D and let us have a look. I'll be right behind you...or maybe waay behind you. HEHE.

PROGRESS REPORT:

got my knife profiled and bevels ground I'm pretty darn pleased with how well it's turning out.

here's some pix.
bandsaw was out of order this weekend so I magic markered my pattern onto the bar and drilled it out with the drill press..

Then I compleated the profile on the grinder with 40 grit..

grinding bevels..

and progress so far..

I would like to see your progress, looks like it will be a good knife! Any ideas on the handle material yet?

thanks for all the intrest in my first go at this...
not too sure on handle material yet. getting some wood from Atakach from his wood giveaway thread he offered to send me some wood. (Thanks again)

I have the knife ground to 60 grit right now think I'll take it to 120 or 200 b4 sending it to HT I also have to drill holes for my pins but dont have the right size bit for the thong tubes I have

thanks Jsmith

anyone else??? constructive criticisim wanted what grit would you all suggest I grind to b4 sneding out for HT? I was thinking like 120 or should I go higher?

No criticism at all,:thumbup: you've done very very well so far. Try to go up as high as you can, 400 would be great for before HT. 120 or even 80 would be ok but you will thank me after HT. It is always a pain to try to remove coarse grind marks from hard steel. I've done that many times but for each hour you spend for soft steel, you spend 2-3 times more for hard one...

Cool. It reminds me of a back up knife. A back up to a side arm that is. Law enforcement officers often carry this sort of blade.
