My first two blades

Hello,
I've been lurking here (and gleaning wisdom from the masters) for a couple of years and I finally finished my first two. They are supposed to be camping/hiking/whittling companions.

The knife is 1/8" O1 with a 4" blade and OAL of 8". The hatchet is 3/16" O1 with a 4" blade and an OAL of 10.5". They were both stock removal, and were heat treated by Rob! and Marilyn at Ranger Original (Thank You). The scales are cocobolo, and the hardware is homemade brass Corby bolts. The blades were ground on one of those $99 4X36" belt sanders.

They are pretty plain and simple as I wanted to concentrate on the process of knifemaking and not get overwhelmed with too many details.

Sorry but my photography skills suck...

First knives?!!! Wow man, you make many of the rest of us look like poseurs! Probably you've seen some of the other first knives we've all posted... That's excellent work. I like the outdoor pics - having them in that context, and showing your very good finish, really sets them off. You bit off quite a chunk, regardless whether you avoided bells and whistles! Making an hatchet is a real commitment. Your handles look very comfy. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing! Now you can quit lurking. ;)

Great Set. I cant wiat to see your later knives if you making this good aready with numbers one and two.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. That means a lot coming from the awesome collective talent that frequent this forum.

I would like to make a leather or kydex sheath for them, but I have the leather working skills of Homer Simpson. I may have to hire that out to somebody.

Next up, a couple of knives for my camp kitchen...

Really nice work!
What a chunk of steel you musta started with
Was the knife make from what you had left after cutting out the
hatchett?. I had guessed not, from one being 1/8th and the other 3/16th's
(Even the file work likes great)
You been in the woods with them yet?
I'd love to hear how well your designs worked in Real life.
Again very nice

Thank you Tom.

The knife works very well. It is flat ground, with a slight secondary bevel. It got hair poppin' sharp, and it holds an edge well. I was actually pleasantly surprised. I've also realized that I need to do more research of blade design and geometry.

The hatchet, well I'm not sure yet. I can't seem to find an angle or bevel style for the edge that works right yet. It chops well, but I was hoping it would make effortless fuzz sticks for fire starting. It doesn't yet, so I need to play with that a bit more. All of my testing has been on firewood and 2X4's in the backyard. No real life testing in the woods yet.
