My first two mirror edges with my new Wicked Edge

I finally broke down and laid out enough cash to buy a high level knife sharpener- that was hard. I never had a professional type sharpening system all these years because I always ended up spending the money on another knife. But I finally did it.

I bought the WEPS Pro Pack 1 with the 5/3.5 micro paste and balsa strops. A week later I added the Ultra fine ceramic 1200/1600 stones and another set of strops but this time leather with the .50 and .25 micron diamond sprays. The 1200/1600 ceramic stones and the .50/.25 micron sprays are the cats meow BTW.

Before receiving the 1200/1600 ceramic stones and the diamond sprays with the leather strops, I used the WEPS on my Orange Skyline I carry for summer shorts due to the light weight as my first WEPS project and to get some experience. I put a nice, hair popping edge on it but stopped just short of a mirror finish on her. I was learning. The profile is even and the edge is nearly mirror but I just wanted to get my feet wet with a low value knife first. Plus the Skyline is a summer activity knife anyway and needs a working edge as opposed to a LASER edge.

After getting the 1200/1600 stones and the diamond sprays, I jumped head first into my Fluted Millie and my S30V Sebenza since both are in my weekly rotation now. I'm delighted with the results. Here they are, my first ever mirror edges on two superb knives :) And let me preface the pictures by saying I have never had a sharper knife in my entire life. These knifes take the phrase "scary sharp" to a few levels higher. I can literally use each of these knives as a straight razor and that's no joke. And by that, I mean they shave just as easily as a straight razor minus the ergos of a straight razor. The hair just glides off at the skin level with no discernable resistance whatsoever - the WEPS makes a knife edge a LASER! I will proudly carry these knives even more now and look forward to showing the edges off any time I get the chance :D

I won't mirror edge every knife I own but I plan to do a few more when the time comes. Xertainly not any catch and releases but for sure all my keepers. I'm going to do my ZT 0560 or 0561 next . . .

Looks like I may have to go that route as well, looks good man. Or maybe I'll just send you a few of mine for more practice :D

Thanks :)

All three knives I did were reprofiled and logged so I can repeat them later for touch ups. 15 degress for Skyline and Millie (The Military is a LASER slicer now :D) and 18 degrees for the Sebenza and I would say I have 40 minutes average on the Fluted Millitary and the Sebenza, each, and that's it. Once you get the device set up, it's a pretty fast process. This is the graduation I used in 40 minutes or so for each mirror finish - 100,200,400,600,800,1000 diamond plates, then 1200,1600 ceramic stones, then 5, 3.5 diamond paste on balsa strops (which aren't much finer than the 1200/1600 ceramics), then I finished them off with the .50, .25 micron diamond sprays on leather strops.

Very nice dude, I'm jealous of the fluted millie. If you ever decide to let it go, think of me. ;)

Great job on the edges, Reek. Plus some very nice knives, too.

I've been curious about this sharpener for sure. Particularly how it would do on recurves, large blades, and large recurves (read, khukuri). I might invest in one of those just to see if it can do a better job than the paper wheels system I'm using right now.

The same thing always happens with me as well, lol. Oh well, one day I'll get around to it....:D

I agree with PG....beautiful edges on some beautiful knives, especially that Millie.

Using the standard stones I had problems with the recurve on this Sepc Bump. Haven't gotten around to trying the curved stones yet.

they look great! i think a mirror edge is a must for a safe queen! it makes the knife look 10x better but i have found i go back to a toothy edge for my edc and work knives. they just zip through materials and the edge grabs like crazy and i find that that helps with food prep, rope or cord and boxes etc.... sometimes those high polish edges dont grab the material on slice cuts in my experience..... what do the BF members perfer for their users.

( im not calling your knives safe queens. i was just saying i have them on safe queens of mine and i dont have them on my users)

Thanks to all with the kind words :)

imbryan7,

Let me say that with these smooth, literally razor blade sharp edges, any medium cuts itself when they see these edges coming. I have a wound to prove it already :D

This is the epitome of sharp. But like I said with the Orange Skyline, I left a "working edge" on that one

there is a differance between a working edge and a toothy edge but you will find a perfect edge for all of your knives and different steels. for example. i had a native 5 in feb. on loan from a buddie. he had a high polish edge on that s35vn and i was not amazingly impressed for some strange reason. it had good edge geometry & no apparent damage. it was just harder to slice things like cardboard and food. i decided not to put that mirrors edge back on when i sharppend it up and left it at a 700 grit stone ( i think ) and i will be honest. that edge scared me just a little bit. hahaha...... enjoy always having your knives "stupid" or "scary" sharp.

Congrats! Those look great! I think I'll have to start saving up for a Wicked Edge. In the mean time, feel like sharpening some 20CV? My XM could use a touch up. :D

I love em. Whats the difficulty on the WEP from 1-10, 10 being most difficult?

Congratz on the new gear Rick. I just got myself an edge pro after using a Sharpmaker and piece of leather for the past three years. It really is amazing what kind of edges I can get and I bet the Wicked edge is even better albeit way more expensive (For me) It's nice to know I can reprofile My edges precisely now.
