My first two mirror edges with my new Wicked Edge

I'm so very glad I spent a little more money and went with the Wicked Edge. Its a great system that most anyone can get the hang of and produces edges that you'll be proud of.
I still need to pick up the 1200/1600 ceramic stones if I want to end up putting some mirror edges on my knives. But right now I'm content with semi polished edges that whittle hair.
But that mirror edge on that Sebenza does look mighty fine :)

I have a Wicked Edge as well, and use a Kalamazoo for my larger knives. The Seb looks like the bevel widens as it nears the tip of the blade. Try repositioning the knife farther back, or even tilted slightly; it worked for me when I had that issue.

Those look excellent, very even mirrors on those. It's a nice feeling being able to get consistent, clean edges like that.

Very nice! I just bought a Wicked Edge, but haven't had time to try it. I hope using it is not difficult!

Just spend a couple hours before you spend your money watching the videos, going to the WE forum on their page and getting the idea for setup and technique down then I'd put it at 4-5 to start with. It's pretty easy. This system is not for every knife out there but it works for the knives I own. I'm not so sure there is one good system that is universal to be honest. I have a Sharpmaker and a AG Russell cCeramic sharpener too and will have use for all of them.

I love em. Whats the difficulty on the WEP from 1-10, 10 being most difficult?

Indeed :) And BTW, I tape my blade sides too like the Edge Pro because when you reprofile, you still need to brush away or wipe away filings that magnetize on the edge. Just to be safe :)

Congratz on the new gear Rick. I just got myself an edge pro after using a Sharpmaker and piece of leather for the past three years. It really is amazing what kind of edges I can get and I bet the Wicked edge is even better albeit way more expensive (For me) It's nice to know I can reprofile My edges precisely now.

The 1200/1600 ceramic stones are the key to speed for this level of finish ;) I spent about 10 -15 minutes with them and that's it then the strops for another 10-15 and the edges shine ;)

Great job! I have been wanting a Wicked Edge system, and I recently saw the video of the inventor (I don't remember his name) sharpening a Para 2. He said to use double sided tape on each side of the blade to make up for the full flat grind when chucking the blade into the machine. Did you have any problems sharpening your military?

I used a piece of suede and it works like a charm. The clamp is totally not an issue if you had a less that stellar experience with the Lansky or DMT clamps like I did. Once you clamp a knife in using the top screw then tighten the bottom screw of the clamp, the knife doesn't rock as all. Key with these systems too, is to let the stones and strops do the work and not too much pressure from your muscles. I'm going to alwasy use a piece of folded over suede or I also heard a rubber jat opener works good too.

The Wicked Edge will give you clean, even edges on any length knife, as long as the knife edge is level (parallel to the base) -- which means resting on the two-pronged positioning peg. The angle will get more acute at the end, where the belly of the blade curves down, but not too much. I actually like this because it gives me a little more cutting power at the end of the knife where I'm usually doing more fine detail work that doesn't require a robust edge.

If you tilt the knife in the clamp, you'll change the angle it puts on the edge from one end of the knife to the other. And unless you have some positioning guide to replicate the tilt angle each time, you'll be defeating one the the key advantages of the Wicked Edge system.

Good to see you had success and are confident in using it:thumbup:

...now if i can only stop buying knives:eek:

Those look outstanding! Wicked Edge updated their website a few days ago and said they were finally back in stock and they were filling back orders. Did you get yours used or did you have to wait a long time or something? I should just email them to find out if there will be any wait before they ship it. In your opinion, can you get a mirror edge with just the Pro Pack and if not, are the 1200/1600 stones the only extra stones needed? I'm just barely okay with $390 for the Pro Pack but if I have to spend another $65 or $100+ more, that's just insane. I just want super sharp mirrored edges!

You can get a mirror edge with the standard Pro Pack 1 configuration but you will work at it much longer and of course, the level of refinement is going to be a step or two better with the .25/.50 micron sprays.

Honestly, I prefer the leather strops over the balsa strops too. You are going to hack the balsa strops up pretty bad until you get your technique down properly plus, I actually think the "give" of the leather does a better job at polishing the entire edge. YMMV.

I had to go to three different dealers to get everything I needed though, The Sharpener Shop for the Pro Pack 1 (was in stock), Chefs Knives to Go for the 1200/1600 and Wicked edge for the leather strops and diamond sprays. That was inconvenient but by then I was already "all in".

Finding all components in stock at the same dealer is not easy if not impossible right now . . .

Great, thanks a lot!

I am going to get one of these before the summer is over. My biggest fear is just making sure I can always have the blade in the clamp properly. I want it mainly because I have more difficulty sharpening really bellied blades with my current set up.

I don't think you'll have a problem. It's possible to get a full flat grind a little off center, but you will see that. You can also get the AngleCube, which will tell you immediately and precisely if both stones are set at the same angle.
