My First Winter Overnighter!!!!!!

That snow looks like day before yesterday Rattsie...
The little dusting that Pike County and Floyd County got....where you at in KY?

What kind of clothing did you wear? If you don't mind my asking.

You didn't even have to show your books...your fire setup gave you away! That log reflector wall is telltale Kochanski/Sears.

Did you get very cold?

(I'm notorious for hating on lean-to's for anything other than summer camping and getting out of the rain in a hurry... :o)

I'm in carter co., not to far off, I wore dickies pants, and a remington hunting fleece, the only time I felt a chill was when I woke up @ 5:30 in the morning!

Sounds like a great trip, and looks like it to. Thanks for sharing. I may have missed it, but did you get cold at all?

You done good, Rattsie.
You made it through a cold night, learned what worked and what could work better.
That makes all the difference in the world.
Now you can talk from even more experience and be sure of what you say.

I usually stop camping in November...the cold COLD temps of December-February play hell on the arthritis in my right knee.

Buy yourself a beer, brother...you deserve it.

Ain't night in the Appalachias with a little fire yakkin' away at you just b-e-a-utiful?

-8x10 blue tarp from walmart

HELL YES! I love those things. Cheap as they can be and work just fine!

Looks like a great time and nice pics.

How did the heat reflector you built work for you ?

Living large, great pics and nice tool-set.

Grab a closed-cell pad for camp chair, and then under that airmat. That was probably the source of your chilly awakening :)

the reflector worked great, I changed into long johns when I went to bed, kept my boggin on and rapped a scarf around my neck and that's it....

I'm planning another overnighter sometime in feb. just to see what happens......I learned that tree bark will keep a fire going, I made a mental note of some standing dead tree's that had loose bark on them, and grabbed as much as I could, when the fire would die down, I would fold some up and stoke the fire with it and small twigs......

It looks like you enjoyed yourself. Kudos to you for getting out and congrats on your first winter night in the woods.

Cool, looks like a great time, need to do some winter camping myself, and it just goes to prove you don't need to spend a fortune to be safe or comfy.

Thanks for sharing the pics! Awesome!!

Now time for some ribbing...
When I saw "winter" I expected SNOW! :D If you want to try some serious winter camping come up here this week! We are expecting a low of -20*F and highs around -1*F!! :p

Great pics bro, I hate that I missed this yesterday...well day before yesterday now. Looks like an awesome trip. I see you got a patina on your knife now, it looks good. The great thing about dead wood is that it burns so good, the bad thing is that it burns so fast. Some good hardwood that has not been dead for so long is good to put on before turning in. It'll coal and burn away slower so you have something to work with when you wake up. I always sleep better in the woods with the smell of wood smoke being wafted through the air by the changing winds. You have the same machete I have, have you found the saw as useless as I have? I would rather chop with a big knife or a machete over a hatchet too...rather just have a big knife with a thicker blade than a machete, but a hatchet works me too hard cutting cross-grain. Should have made some deer chili while you were out there!

Nice trip, I just did my first winter camping earlier this month. I think a lean-to shelter with a fire may be better than curling up in a cold tent like I did, though. I may try this later on in the winter.

man that looks like a great time. learning what works and what dont! nothing like some hot ramen on a cold day in the bush...i enjoy idahoan instant mash taters too! :)

nothing better than a day and night in the woods to sort out the brain!!!
