I finally finished a knife with more successes than errors!

It's a 3.5" Wharnliffe blade ground from 1/8" O-1 that I heat treated in my homemade, PID-controlled kiln before quenching in McMaster-Carr oil and tempering twice up to 400 degrees F. The scales are JatMat's "margarita" G-11 held tight with 1/8" stainless pins, 1/4" stainless tube, and Brownell's Acraglas.

The ricasso was not meant to be that wide, and I ground too deeply near the edge on the opposite side, but sharpening seems to have evened it out somewhat.

This is the first in a set of four blanks I cut. I have another ground, HT-ed, and hand-sanded and awaiting its scales. And there are two more blanks on my grinder waiting for their bevels. With any luck, at least one of them will be good enough for the newb KITH.

Well done! Glad to see you're focusing so much on heat treating.

Looks like a whicked cutter.

Finish work could be cleaned up (still can) but most of that comes with some time and experience.

Thanks for sharing :)

Great job! I've always liked long, pointy wharncliffes. It looks a lot like a wharncliffe I have sitting in my drawer that I was suppose to get around to rehandle-slabbing (yes, that's a new word) for a BF give away.

Having just said that reminds me...I was suppose to rehandle-slab a wharncliffe knife I have sitting in my drawer for a BF give away....hmmmmm....need...to...do..that.

I'm with nick on this, i would rather have a knife that has a good heat treat then a knife that just looks good.

Very well done, congrats . I guess wharncliffe's are IN thesedays.

Nathan, this is a very similar knife I've been working for KITH and you do a similar one also, now I know what a woman feels when she has the same dress of another woman at the party :grumpy:....

galadduin,

If it makes you feel any better, I profiled my knife out probably 2 years ago and put a handle on it at the end of last year. :D So your fashion sense is a bit behind the times. :D:D:p And I am WAY too slow in the shop. :(

In all seriousness though, each and every hand made knife is unique, and I'm sure your KITH knife will be amazing and entirely its own knife.

That's a nice knife! I like that G-11. Sounds like a good size for urban carry too. ;) Thanks for sharing, we're open for seeing more soon.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! The first sibling should be done in the next few days. I've temporarily run out of finer belts for touching up the fronts of the scales. Are Trizact Gator belts okay for grinding Micarta or should they be reserved for steel?

Number 2 in the batch.

Slightly shorter, 3.25" blade (I got careless with the point). I tried a Scotch Brite surface conditioning belt on this one, but I'm not too happy with it. I'll probably try to salvage a hand-rubbed finish on it. The scales are black linen phenolic from the group buy with red fiberglass liner.

Cool cutters, man. Wonderfull workers. Are you going for Kydex or leather sheaths. I imagine those in a Kydex sheaths hanged on a belt or neck.

DrThunder88- can you tell me more about your homemade kiln? I tried to PM/email you and didn't see it under your username.
