My first "ZT" and my first ZT...counterfeit blades and clones

I went to a local county gun show over the weekend. I used to go fairly regularly but have not been to one in years so when I saw it was this weekend and had the time; I decided to go check it out. The show was noticeably smaller than ones I have attended in the past but it was very crowded. As I maneuvered my way through the crowded aisles, I came upon a seller with several cases of knives. The first thing that caught my eye was a waved Spyderco Endura (it’s been on my want list for a while). I asked the seller if I could check it out and how much he wanted for it. As he handed it to me he said “I have it marked at $50 but I’d take $45”. This one had an orange handle and while I do like orange quite a bit, I was thinking more along the lines of black. As I examined the knife, I noticed that the edge seemed a little dinged up and there appeared to be some small scratches on the blade. I thought that perhaps the $45 price tag was because the knife was used. Since the orange wasn’t my thing I continued to look through his cases. Almost immediately I noticed a ZT 0770 and, since I didn’t own a ZT and a few extra pennies in my pocket I decided to check it out. When I turned it over I saw the price tag for $70.00 and the seller said “I can do that for $65” cheap outdoorsfan said “what a deal” but logical outdoorsfan said “something’s not right” but the cheap won out and I bought my first “ZT” box and all.

As I continued through the show I came upon another seller that had quite a few knives as well, including 7-8 different ZTs. I looked over his table and came to a section that had a small handwritten sign that said “clones”…a Spyderco Southard Flipper for $70, Paramilitary for $40, PM2 for $30…logical outdoorsfan said “told you so”. These clone knives were remarkable. The action on the Southard was buttery smooth…the PM2 looked like the others I’ve seen down to almost every detail. I had heard of these fakes before but seeing them really made me understand the lengths these unscrupulous manufacturers go to replicate these knives. Everything was there…down to perfectly reproduced packaging and certificates of authenticity.

I had a long conversation and ended up buying a sweet ZT 0620 CF Emerson Tanto. It was a great deal from an authorized Kershaw dealer but not quite close to the $150 ish dollars off retail the 0770 was. I promptly returned to the first seller and told him I wanted my money back. With a bit of huffing and puffing he obliged but I wonder how many people did he dupe that day? He had a myriad of blades and manufacturers…an Izula for $20…a TOPS necker for $15…if only they were real I would have died and gone to heaven.

Have any of you guys ever seen these clones (a.k.a. fakes)? Ever bought one? Thoughts on those that sell them, both without telling the buyer and those that do acknowledge they’re not real?

BTW…super happy with my first real ZT!

I am curious if you were to ask him something along the lines of, "Hey, since this is my first higher end knife, do you mind if I get a photo of you and I standing together with it?"
If he would try to stay out of it due to him knowing they were fakes, if he did know that is...

Then send the photo to KAI and the time and date of the show with a quick run down of the fakes you noticed... they may not take too kindly knowing that an 8' pickup truck bed was full of clones...
----Or, just don't buy them.

I haven't been to gun or knife shows yet, and I am hearing more and more of this type of thing and it makes me want to Not go to one...

He for sure knew what he was selling which is also likely why he didn't look at me nor ask me why I wanted my money back. After talking to two other dealers, who were selling the real ones, I found out a couple of "tells". The printing on the blade is not quite as crisp as the real ZTs and they only use one serial number, rather than individually serializing each knife. One of the dealers said to tell the seller you might want to buy two and then check out the serial numbers. If they match you know what that means..el fake-o.

That's the one I had a table at a couple of years ago, it pretty much sucked, seems everything was overpriced, like ammo. Good deals on jerky though! I wonder if the Oak Lawn knife show is any good anymore.

Ive been to 3 gun shows all in Natchez, MS and all were way overpriced.

Only thing ive ever bought was a couple of old ammo cans for $15.

I actually found some good deals on ammo (100 rnds of .40 for $25)...and how can you call a $30 Paramilitary expensive??? Such deals to be had?

Oh...here she is...in all her titanium, carbon fiber and CTS204P-bladed glory...

A guy tried selling me a Benchmade auto at the last show I went to, not good enough to call a copy. I told him Intellectual Property Theft was illegal. He said it was real but I noticed it was off his table when I walked by later. At the Labor Day Flea Market last year several people were arrested for selling counterfeit goods.

I got stuck with a couple pair of Fake Levi's a month ago! What junk! The on both pair in the first wearing 2 belt loops came off! After second wearing the crotch on one was spit out! Bought at a clothing store that sells "overruns" (I guess that's code for fakes. They have an all sales final policy!). Bad Karma punishment on my part for buying the Anti-conservative brand .

I went to the annual A.E.C.A. show in Oak Lawn in Sept. Very small, only two custom makers and everything else was just odds and ends.

Are there any big shows around here anymore?

The Badger Knife Club Knife Show is a big show. Only knives but lots of them. Many tables of customs, manufactured, and used. Supplies also.

It's probably to far to drive for most but since I live in northern Il., not to far for me. The custom makers actually charge a fair price for their knives. The people I've talked to all seemed vary friendly. $5.00 fee to get in but waved if you are a Badger club member. Membership is $5.00.

That could be interesting. About a 2 hr. drive for me.

interesting. glad you figured it out before it was too late. thanks for the info, Sean.

The weird part is that it probably wasn't a bad knife. If these manufacturers that can produce this level of "clone" concentrated on producing quality blades of their own design they could make some really high "value" knives. I could understand if they studied these designs and interpreted some of the features rather than cloning aka stealing others patented work.

Good on you for taking the clone back, and congrats on your ZT!

Brad is a dealer now, just FYI -

I have a 620, and that knife has bitten me more than any other; it came VERY sharp, and the wave is tricky until you get used to it.

It is well built and a looker - enjoy!

best

I got my ZT from Brad last year, good guy to deal with, and he's local.
