How come my eight inch pocket axe from Fiskars is one of the sharpest edges in this house?
I was slicing paper with it, got a tad tired, picked up my zdp Delica to do the same, and was like ''wtf happened to this thing?''
I have been sharpening both about the same way (gentle convex touchup thingy), with my dc-3 stone from Fallkniven.
The obvious hypothesis would be something like; ''well you're comparing what is perhaps the hardest stainless on the market against an axe steel''.
Yes, i am. But what exactly am i comparing zdp-189 to?
All the Fiskars website says is that it's 'drop forged'.
I'd assume it's not stainless.
This whole pointless rant is my question: What are Fiskars axes made out of.

Not sure what it is, but mine is razor sharp to! i'm not sure what drop forging is eather...

soft steels are "easy" to put a wicked edge on. ZDP will require a considerable amount more work and finesse, but the result is massively longer edge retention.

I also have a couple of Fiskars hatchets, super sharp.
If I had to guess I'd say they're made of 1065 maybe even 1095 steel. Definitely not stainless.
