my forge

When I first started knifemaking I wanted nothing to do with forging just something i didn't want to do. I just figured I'd buy damascus. Then I started talking to more and more customers and an ABS mastersmith and decided I'm going to jump head first into this knifemaking and decided to make a forge. Making things is another thing I had trouble with I didn't have the time I wanted to build it so I was going to buy them. That line of thinking can get expensive fast.
After getting started on building this I have no idea why I didn't want to try forging earlier. I haven't even received my insulation yet and I'm nine kinds of excited about this. I used Ray Roger's website and Indian George's tutorial. The only thing I couldn't find within a reasonable price was a blower. I looked at them on ebay, surplus houses, and what not and if they weren't trashed they were expensive (>$100) so I started looking at leaf blowers. This one is rated at 250 cfm and was 39 bucks at walmart and 30 at the local hardware store. I've got an extra gate valve lying around so I'll probably install it and a "t" between the blower and the adjusting valve incase I need to bleed off air to avoid too much backpressure on the blower. I cut 3.5 inches off the end and used a benzomatic to heat the black tip to make it fit over the nipple (the tube was more oval). Let me know what you think and if I should change something before I insulate it.
I didn't put the inlet at much of an angle my figuring was after 2" of insuwool and the coatings then it would line up with the top of insuwool enough to roll around the insulation. I maybe wrong but that's my figurin. Sorry for the rambling I'm just trying to waste time for the UPS man to show up with my order from Darren Ellis. edited to add a thanks for the guys who made the tutorials. I was also advised that the leaf blower may not be able to run continously that long something I hadn't thought of, so I searched ebay again for a blower looked in a few more spots and found what the actual name of the squirrel cage blower is called and that turned up a handful of cheaper blowers.

Kinda looks like mine except Im using a Hiar Dryier and a 2" pvc male adapter before my gate valve, works good tho. best thing is if it goes out. It only cost me $10, so I go to wally world and get another.

thanks for the link Indian George. Rusty I'm now actually considering buying a squirrel cage blower after talking to some guys about the leaf blower. Does your's get up to welding temps?

Ryan,

In the AM I will take a picture of my forge and post it. The shaded pole blower is older than dirt and works like a dream. I don't even really know what the cfm is but it is well below 100. I have actually had my forge up to 3000f. That's when my temp probe melted and the controller errored out. Not to say that you need it this hot just that it can. I'll see you i the AM pacific time.

Here's some shots of my forge. I recently went to the gate valve. With the nozzle system I made I can control the heat from 1300-2500F easily. When I did my last HT in the forge I was able to hold a temp without messing with the propane or air at all. Stayed at 1425 for 20 minutes to soak. I am in the process of setting up my salt pot which I call R2D2 as seen to the left. The blower was an old one that was removed from a RR crossing control box. It found it's way home and onto my forge. The motor is a bit bigger than the standard shaded pole blower so it probably has better pressure than ones with the smaller motors. Am I saying this is the only way to do it, absolutely not. Just how I found it to work the best for me. Good luck

Thanks for the photos and all the advice you've been giving me. You've convinced me to go to another blower can't argue with results. I'm also gonna make a better mixing chamber.

You won't regret it. When you get a little further I can show you my nozzle design. Creates the pressure talked about in your other post or you can just go with a 1.25 or 1" burner tube.

actualy past welding temp "left one in too long and the end melted off. but my tube is only 12" with 2" of koa wool and was at 2 1/2 lbs preasure. I ll post a pic just to show you my junkyard adventure. I apologise in advance for bad pics, it was from my phone.
