Recently, Duncan (Campbellclanman) from New Zealand, posted a thread about the generosity of this forum (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ith-enough-thanks-traditional-forums-kindness ), of which, thanks to a couple of our other great members, he had recently been the beneficiary. What Duncan’s natural modesty prevented him from saying, is that only a few days before he had received the knives gifted to him, he had been responsible for a most munificent act of generosity himself.
I received an e-mail in which Duncan asked if I’d accept a knife from him. It was a very special knife, the 2010 Bladeforums knife made by GEC, a real beauty, but more than that even, it was his FAVOURITE knife, the knife he carried everyday. Reading Duncan’s e-mail knocked the breath out of me, that he wanted to give me his favourite knife, one that he loved and treasured, it was a gesture beyond kindness and generosity. I’m sure you can understand why I was deeply moved by this selfless act of true friendship.

I was in something of a daze for the rest of the day, and beyond. In fact, the day I received Duncan’s e-mail, I had planned to go to the Royal Armouries in Leeds to take some pics for Vanguard’s son, and my head was in such a spin that I forgot to put the memory card in my camera, as well as forgetting my reading glasses.
Duncan and I had both expected that shipping from New Zealand to England would be a lengthy process, but in fact the knife arrived here very swiftly indeed. And so late yesterday afternoon, I was absolutely thrilled to receive a box from New Zealand, containing a nice little fleece-lined zippered pouch, and inside it this lovely knife.

This is my first GEC knife, and what a fantastic way to receive it. The quality of manufacture and fit and finish are everything that I hoped they’d be. It’s a great-looking knife also, and as well as being grateful to Duncan, I’m grateful to everyone who put it together. The knife is starting to develop a gentle patina, which adds to its beauty, particularly along the back of the springs where the two steels contrast wonderfully.
I really like the pattern too. Something which Duncan didn’t know, is that the very first knife I had as a boy had a similar pattern, and recently I’ve found myself hankering after another. I don’t think I’m going to find anything better than this, or a knife which means so much to me because of the way it was attained, freely given by a kind and generous friend. Many thanks again Duncan, I know that you warm-spirited people here will be thrilled also, because you will appreciate just what a grand gesture is involved. I am truly humbled by being thought a worthy recipient of your favourite knife Duncan. Thank you.
