Recently, Duncan (Campbellclanman) from New Zealand, posted a thread about the generosity of this forum (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ith-enough-thanks-traditional-forums-kindness ), of which, thanks to a couple of our other great members, he had recently been the beneficiary. What Duncan’s natural modesty prevented him from saying, is that only a few days before he had received the knives gifted to him, he had been responsible for a most munificent act of generosity himself.

I received an e-mail in which Duncan asked if I’d accept a knife from him. It was a very special knife, the 2010 Bladeforums knife made by GEC, a real beauty, but more than that even, it was his FAVOURITE knife, the knife he carried everyday. Reading Duncan’s e-mail knocked the breath out of me, that he wanted to give me his favourite knife, one that he loved and treasured, it was a gesture beyond kindness and generosity. I’m sure you can understand why I was deeply moved by this selfless act of true friendship.

I was in something of a daze for the rest of the day, and beyond. In fact, the day I received Duncan’s e-mail, I had planned to go to the Royal Armouries in Leeds to take some pics for Vanguard’s son, and my head was in such a spin that I forgot to put the memory card in my camera, as well as forgetting my reading glasses.

Duncan and I had both expected that shipping from New Zealand to England would be a lengthy process, but in fact the knife arrived here very swiftly indeed. And so late yesterday afternoon, I was absolutely thrilled to receive a box from New Zealand, containing a nice little fleece-lined zippered pouch, and inside it this lovely knife.

This is my first GEC knife, and what a fantastic way to receive it. The quality of manufacture and fit and finish are everything that I hoped they’d be. It’s a great-looking knife also, and as well as being grateful to Duncan, I’m grateful to everyone who put it together. The knife is starting to develop a gentle patina, which adds to its beauty, particularly along the back of the springs where the two steels contrast wonderfully.

I really like the pattern too. Something which Duncan didn’t know, is that the very first knife I had as a boy had a similar pattern, and recently I’ve found myself hankering after another. I don’t think I’m going to find anything better than this, or a knife which means so much to me because of the way it was attained, freely given by a kind and generous friend. Many thanks again Duncan, I know that you warm-spirited people here will be thrilled also, because you will appreciate just what a grand gesture is involved. I am truly humbled by being thought a worthy recipient of your favourite knife Duncan. Thank you.

Jack

A superb gesture and likewise post Jack.

I hope its as much of a pleasure for you to use as it has been for Duncan.

Nice job Duncan! Jack is a great fella, a very thoughtful person.
Jack congrats with your first GEC knife, you can read about them but until you own one, and hold it in your hand and open and use, and close it, is something a traditional knife fan should experience. Apart from a few knives I have from the early 1900's the quality is apparent. Now a nice robust knife should be christened with a nice robust Schlenkerla Smokebeer :-)

Great gesture Duncan, and enjoy your new knife Jack.

Many thanks guys. I've been really overwhelmed with kindness recently. I think Duncan's knife will be a great partner for my Kabar Peanut Pete. I shall go in search of a christening beer this afternoon! :)

[psst]It's the 2011[/psst]

Oh, my goodness.

"Keep company with those who make you better."

That's the company I'm in, here with all of you in this subforum.

As someone once said,
Yes, I think there's a lot wrapped up in the gesture of giving away something you love and appreciate in order to share that feeling with someone you respect enough to know they'll feel the same way.

"Way to go" doesn't begin to express how encouraged I am for, and by, Duncan right about now....

Congratulations, Jack.

The generosity and good fellowship demonstrated by so many of our forum members, is just amazing. What an awesome gesture on Duncan's part. It couldn't happen to a nicer chap either. Thanks for sharing it with us, Jack.

Well done on both of you:thumbup:
What a great heartwarming thing to read in the morning!

Awesome!

In this case, the word applies to both of the gentlemen involved, as well as this forum and the people in it.

Congratulations to both of you, what a great gift. I know that bottle opener won't be bored :)
And a bit of work with a needle file can improve the beer-opening-experience a lot ;)

To Duncan
Your an amazing fellow, sir

To Jack
Could not have happened to a more worthy fellow! I feel your happiness and it makes me smile!

Can you imagine what it would be like if the rest of the world behaved like the people in this forum

That's the kind of guy Duncan is. I received a similar gift from him in 2011 (I think). A beautiful S&M sowbelly trapper in green bone. It is a knife I'll treasure the rest of my life. Recently there was a thread about the danger of giving a friend a knife. It is hogwash I say. I count Duncan as high as any friend I see face to face here. And the knife just made me think that much more of him. He's a great guy and asset to the forum.

Duncan, I salute you. Jack, I hope that the forum knife you have received will mean as much to you as the S&M trapper does to me.

The generosity in our community and especially in the traditional crowd is beyond belief.
I have been really struggling the past few years and I have been so blessed by the folks here I can't give enough thanks.
Nicely done Duncan. Thanks for letting us in on this Jack. Enjoy that beauty.

Thanks for posting this, Jack! It shows once again the connection between the fellows here to other fellows in the Traditional Forum. Even on the other side of the planet. What an outstanding place full of great guys (and gals). A wonderful place spend spare time! :)

Thank you for all your kind words, the generosity of spirit never seems to end here, you truly are a great bunch
