My frist Mora

Welcome to the Mora madness. You are in deep trouble from hear on out:eek: . One thing I do no matter what model I get is; lay the bevel flat on a stone (water or oil) and bring it back into good steel.

Sometimes with the production method they use the edge gets a little to hot, and the edge can dull prematurely. Bring the steel back aways, and problem solved.

Congrats BTW......

I have a red handled KJ Erickson (model #510 in the link)http://ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

And that is exactly what I use mine for, cleaning trout and camping. In fact, I just cleaned some trout with it on memorial day. Mine is carbon steel so I make sure to put some oil on it when I get home and I don't have any problems with rust, and yes it is the perfect little trout knife and for so cheap there's no reason why everyone shouldn't have one.

I did make a leather sheath for mine though because I couldn't figure out how to even attach the supplied one to a belt lol.

The edge wasent "super" sharp so i ran it on my ceramic stone and it shaves great now. So what other models should i look into now?

Now ya' need to wander over and pay Ragnars site a visit:

http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

he's definitely good people....with lotsa Moras....:D

The 780 is a very nice knife, but the 840 and 860 feel better to me in the hand and definitely come with a much better sheath.

and everyone's gotta try out the Mora 2K survival knife ya' know....and no collection is complete without one of the true Puukko styles,, which gives one an opportunity to experiment with the laminated carbon steel blades..and then there's the big honkin' ones with 8" blades or so....:D

Good news is you can buy all the ones I just listed and still spend less money than you would on just one of the many high end knives that don't even perform as well.

Used my sons Mora yesterday to retrieve arrows out of wood and stumps and such. not only do they cut well, but they're much sturdier than they appear.

Stingray- I really like the sheath you have for yours. I've made a couple of similar sheathes that were stitchless for a Nessmuk and the first Puukko I made.

Is yours one piece stitchless? It looks like two pieces...does the tip poke out the bottom if you sheathe your knife too tightly? (A problem with my own) Any hiints or suggestions on how you did yours?

Very nicely done!

lol, great minds think alike Stingray:D I like your sheath idea. The one it comes with is deff. odd.

I got rid of three moras-- so I could buy a 2000 :) Moras are as bad as potato chips!

if you go to the knife center and enter finnish knives, scroll down and you will find a finnish work knife,m571.its a 3 3/8 " blade and a red handle like a mora.its forged carbon steel blade and the best cutting knife i have.cost $18.95

I remeber my first experiance with a mora. My friend brought his to my house and I was amazed at the bevel. It was before I was really into knives and I loved how easily it went through newspaper. That day I decided I was going to get one but then ended up procrastinating for a long long time. When I finally got mine (along with an opinel), the grind on the tip was a little messed up and there were some flat spots on the edge, but once I touched it up it was super sharp. Its a shame that after all this time I still havent gone out and had the chance to put it to good use.

As for shaving sharp, mine didnt come popping sharp but honestly, the mora might be one of the easiest knife to sharpen. With a bevel that big, it practically jsut clicks in even for a newbie. I was teaching a friend of mine how to sharpen and I let him practice on my mora at first to let him get the idea of how sharpening goes.

I love Mora and the Finnish equivalent from Fiskars. Good steel, ergonomic plastic handle, very sharp and robust. They cost $5-$10 here in Scandinavia and are available in all hardware stores. You end up having loads of them, it is nice to have a couple in the car, for example. Talk about a useful and carefree knife!

Fiskars version

I have a collection of Buck, CRKT, Al Mar, Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel etc. I mostly use a Buck 118 as my backpacking knife. But these cheap Scandinavian knives get used around the house.

One advantage is that the Moras are inexpensive enough that you can experiment and find out which models you prefer. It really is personal preference based upon hand size and how you use a knife. The ones you don't like make great steak knives, loaners, or even weed diggers (in the case of one I really didn't like). They are far more robust than I ever expected.

Be warned that it is easy to become a Moraholic.

I would recommend purchasing from Ragnar. Great prices and even better service. That reminds me, I worked a lot of overtime recently and should treat myself to a few new toys!

Uh-oh! You're hooked now! :D

If you want to see a huge selection of these and similar knives (plus a few other items) take a look at Ragnar's website, http://ragweedforge.com/. He's a good man to buy from and his prices are most reasonable I think. I just looked again and I see he has added some to his site. Have a look.

Everyone should have at least one Mora. Here is my 711 with homemade leather sheath. Makes a good lightweight belt knife.

The first of many I'm sure. Whatever else you carry, axe, hatchet, machete, etc if you add "and a Mora" you're pretty much covered. Mac

I ust bought the same model as Ivan on eba but, with hunter orange handle and sheath.
The day it arrived I liked it so much I ordered 4 more of the same one !

They are great little knives. Now I have them all over the place. Car , kitchen, shop, backyard, etc.

They are inexpensive enough that now I plan on getting more just for the other colors:D
