My GEC #85 Bullet End Jack... and some thoughts

NoNameNomad,

As soon as you disengage the LL and move the blade about 5-10% of it's travel then you can just let go of the LL tab as the blade shank has now pinned the LL aside and it's no longer an issue in the movement/closing of the blade. Jump on the 85 EO if you found one! :)

Pics that may help...

Blade fully opened. LL can be seen engaged.

Here the LL has been disengaged and the blade is free to close from here on. The thumb no longer needs to be near the LL tab.

So, judging by the pics, does the liner lock it from above the blade, or does it also lock it at the back like a standard Walker liner lock?

Notice too that on the last run I moved the LL tab back a bit so it fits a natural grip better.

That was a great decision you made! I once had a #73 LL, and I sold it due to the positioning of the LL tab. I love the position of the tab on your SFO 85 EO LL! Like I keep saying in this thread, the tab itself actually creates an ergonomic feel in the hand.

I just went to pick up another African Blackwood SFO 85 EO LL, and noticed that those are now all sold out (probably because of my glowing review :) ).
I would liked to have picked up one more as my only back-up/duplicate knife, but alas, this is no longer possible. I am kicking myself for selling the first one I bought, yet I consider myself lucky for picking up a new one last month. My father has another one, so there are two in the family at least lol.

I am now considering picking up one of each of the remaining ones in the bone and buffalo covers (If I can afford them) because this is truly my favorite pattern by GEC (next to the Spearpoint Charlows).

Here is my latest one and only, still shiny and new. I was keeping it new in the tube because I thought I would have been picking up another one, but since that can no longer happen, this will have to be a user now. 8)

Truly a beautiful piece. Have been looking for long pull spears in this pattern and just haven't been able to find any. Have a burnt stag clip on order for the time being.

These next 4 pics are after she has been used heartily for for a couple weeks. I've used it to cut up potatos and apples. I've used it to sharpen pencils, whittle, open packages, cut hang-nails, and all kinds of other good stuff. The patina is natural and is just because I've not cleaned the blade much. I did oil it from time to time but only wiped the blade off after I was done cutting stuff.

Thanks for looking!

The 85 never really caught my eye, but your pictures have certainly turned my head. That's a great looking knife.

What a great looking knife! I'm in the same boat as you, while a few years in front, as I was initially seduced with the modern flickers, ball bearing and all and now my passion has shifted to the traditional slipjoints and lockbacks. Just purchased a Northwoods Indian River Jack 2015 and now my mini grip has lost its appeal! So it looks like I'm now on the traditional slippery sloop and lovin every minute of it.

The #85 was my grail for a long time, then I was given a charlow and it drifted to the back burner for a while but now there is too much temptation:D Do any of you guys have comparison pics to a 15? How would you compare them?
James.

Both are great knives, the 85 is a bit longer.

That looks like a great knife! I almost bought an #85 instead of the #92 I just got today. Just started with the traditionals after a few years of edc modern folders, maybe I will experience what you described soon.
