My lady and I agreed that we weren't going to buy each other any serious Valentines Day presents. Just to prove that you can't trust women, she bought me a couple of whoppers (I'll post the other next week)! She knows that I have been looking at Bark River Goloks for a long time and so she found me a "prototype" on e-bay. Only problem is that the blade has no edge. I think I am going to send it to BRKT and see if they will put an edge on it... Is there any chance that it was never hardened or tempered??? Oh well, I guess I'll have to forgive her one way or another:D.

Bushman,

Don't drool too much yet, it's a wall hanger right now! It's a essentially a training blade, the surface that would the edge is about 1/3 as thick as the spine. I assume that Bark River never bothered to finish the blade as they were just messing around with the size and shape... I am real comfortable with my sharpening skills, but I don't want to screw the grind or angle on a golok (hopefully BRKT will help me out). It was still damn nice of my wife to buy for me though...

That is very cool. the folks at BR should be able to fix it up. I always did like the looks of those goloks.

That's odd. You oughta ask Mike the owner if it's some sort of demo model or something. He's nice. He'll know. He can sharpen it to where it has a devilish edge for you also.

I sent one in before X-mas for a refurb. GREAT job and this puppy will save you now. Send them a note and I know they will hook you up. I have 2 and can't wait till they go back into production.

Thanks guys, I've heard that BR is a stand-up company. HD, It was sold as a "prototype", like I say maybe they were just messing around with the size or something, I suppose it is a whole lot easier to handle and evaluate without an edge... But, I'm just guessing

All the Goloks from BR are prototypes at this point. When they go into the next run they will be regular production. Both the ones I have are protos and per Mike all out now are like that.

His knives that are marked prototype that I have have all been properly heat treated and sharp as all get out. Send it to Mike. He'll treat you right.

He sends the blades out for heat treat, so I'd doubt one got missed. Have you skated a file down it??? He'll have to grind an edge in, so any scratches this causes will get removed anyway.

Fiddleback/Briggz,

No markings on it whatsoever. Maybe it is a Demo/prototype... It is possible that somebody ground the edge off, but that would seem unlikely. I didn't run a file down it, I didn't want to screw the geometry, I think I'll send it to BR. Can't wait to see how it cuts, I hear good things about these goloks...

yeah my wife did the same thing....she purchased me a New Scrapyard Dog father CG from the Scrap yard site....

TTD,

I figure that you and I are pretty lucky men... To have women who know what a Scrapyard or golok is, and be willing to buy them for us for V-day, pretty special....
