My Grail Knife

Why are most "grail knives" art-type overbuilt folders?

I call that one my "grail" knife, because A) chances are I'll never own one... And B) it would truly would be a one of a kind art piece commissioned by me, for me, done from 3 different artists; the knife maker, the etcher, and the scrimshaw-er.

The knife itself, a DBS winged Prophet, is hardly an"overbuilt" folder, but rather just a really good folder... And I will own one (or more) of them I'm sure. The additional custom grips then, that's no different then many other custom grips available for petsonalizing many Knives; but the art work, (just like some of my original tats), that is what would really set it apart and make it my "grail". (Like tattoos for my knife).

There are some other Knives too that could be considered "grail Knives" of a lesser extent; a BRK Bravo 2 with a sheep's horn handle, a Wilson Combat RRxl w/ cocobolo, a Sebenza, all the way up to a Sergio Consoli or a LionSteel tm1 TiDust LE, or something like an Arno Bernard with croc skin handle, or some true customs from a few other makers. But those to me are more just Knives that I really like and would love to own... Not true "Grail" status...

But who knows, now typing it, considering I do plan on owning a prophet one day relatively soon, within a year or so I'd say, and custom handles aren't out of the question after that... maybe I will eventually own the knife of my dreams...?

Three of my true 'grail' knives (sorry, I just couldn't pick one), meaning a knife that I really, really would love to own, but the price and rarity make it very difficult to find and nearly impossible to acquire... I've got a thing for Timascus and Moku-Ti... how can you not?

I've got a beautiful Arno Bernard Croc, with sheep horn handles and cape buffalo sheath. Got it in a trade, just not my thing.

My "grail" knife seems pretty pedestrian compared to a lot of the knives on this thread, but with 2 kids and a wife in university, my knife budget is extremely limited. I have been lusting over the Spyderco PM2 in S30v with camo G-10 handle.....pretty common around here, I know, but I'm about as likely to buy a $150 folder as my next knife as I am to buy a Lamborghini as my next car

I've got a new one every 4-6 months lol.

My latest is a John Gray Thuck..which I have on layaway..

Wow! that's a great looking knife really like the combination of the blackwash of the blade against the scale. Thumb studs are interesting.

I love how he chamfers the presentation side stud.. the blade on this one is cts-xhp chisel ground.

This is one of those older threads that will always be relevant...usually when folks talk about "Grail" knives, they're talking about Folders. I just obtained my Grail a couple months ago, & it's fixed-blade perfection in my mind! BTW, I've yet to take my own pics of the knife, & since purchasing it, I've acquired a nice custom leather sheath for it & applied 24-coats of Tru-Oil & 3 coats of paste wax to the dyed Black Ash burl scales to maximize the texture & glow - loving it!

One of my all time gotta have it knives is the Microtech Socom Delta TE, G10, with black Elmax blade. I just scored one in a trade deal, and I'm stoked.

I'm really excited because I'm actually getting one rather than just dreaming about it! Gonna make a belt loop for the sheath with some paracord. This baby is gonna be used and carried a lot.

Which model?

That's how a lot of my "grail" knives are seen by me; not that they're hard to find by any stretch, but actually some are fairly common and quite accessible, but as a middle class common folk, with a family, house, and bills, the budget just isn't there to acquire them all, so outside of winning the lottery, there will be some I likely will never own... Want vs. Need, and when sizing up my current collection, I don't "need" any new knives, (though I know I'll still scratch that itch to satisfy wants occasionally).

Another on my list, one I am fairly certain I will never own as long as I'm with my son's mother, even if i could afford it is;

The Grail folding knife has not been invented yet for me. Some have gotten close, but there is always something I don't like. So I am still on that qwest. I think the spyderco Tuff and Lionspy have come the closest to my idea of folder grail perfection.

On the other hand the grail fixed blade knife was invented for me in 1997, I bought it in 1998 and I didn't realize until nearly 7 years later that I had the grail all along. Even to this day, I continue to buy other knives because I like knives, but my original 1997-8 grail knife is still here and is still my workhorse. It's steel had the perfect combination of elements with a near perfect HT, and a simple utilitarian design. Perfection. For me anyway.
