My grail traditional

I'm not going to mention my 'grail' knife, because I just found one for sale, and I don't want to reveal its location until I have the funds to buy it. ;)

Mine may just be a GEC White Owl with ebony scales, a clip blade and no bail.

Mine's coming later this year. Case/Bose 3.5" wharncliffe trapper. Of course, my true grail would be a real Bose, but let's be realistic.

There are a lot on my list.

I am not sure my tastes are refined enough to compete. As for originals, there are a few that of course would be great. But really, any solid old knife with full blades and good walk and talk, with unbroken scales of bone or wood would probably be on my list! I am not too greedy!

I tend to be focused on knives I would carry, and use. There are tons of knives that would be worth an arm and a leg that I think "hey, that is a grail", but I might not use or carry if I had them because of the value tied up in them.

It is like wanting a Bugatti Veyron, but knowing you would rather have an original condition, unrestored 1978 Toyota FJ40 in the original Mustard Yellow with 20,000 original miles on it!!!!! (MY biggest regret in life is not buying that darned FJ40. I had a shot at it for $8,000. The only non original parts were the Rubber gasket around the stick, which was torn and replaced, and the front windshield, which had a small crack and was replaced. No rust, no modifications, no scratches, no dents! I told him I had to pass, and he came over later and told me he sold it for 16,000 a week later. That same vehicle would be hard to price today! Even if I bought it and drove it for the last 14 years, it would still have been worth more!).

I got a "grail" this year from my friend J. Oeser. His pictures are so much better than mine. I might have to go poach them and add them later.

Well, since we're dreaming, my 'grail' would be an original Scagel Hunter.

I just need to find that $20k I left lying around somewhere...:D

Todd Davison makes a PERFECT quality knife for a very reasonable price and he delivers that baby FAST.
Attainable perfection.

a GEC conductor, love the way it looks, love the size, just don't have the dough (poor college kid salary)

I finally pulled the trigger on one in burnt stag. It's a beautiful knife, and I only had it about a week, but didn't like the bail on the burnt stag model (only way to get one with a coping secondary blade (burnt stag)). Got another conductor in ebony, without the bail and with a coping blade (limited run, here on the exchange), so the stag one is maybe up for sale. It's a really nice pattern, pocketwise, and just for daily life. Just sayin, if you find one you like, just buy it.

Bill Ruple stag copperhead. Makes me swoon. :D

A single clip blade GEC #25, can't seem to find one anywhere!
Email me, sir, we will talk.;)

I look at the pictures in Charlie's Elusive Schrade thread and dream of a grail buffet.

I'm glad for everybody who has found theirs. Mine doesn't yet exist and I have yet to find somebody interested in making it, so it remains in my head until I change that.

I must say the Oeser is an extremely good looking gunstock!!

I found mine, I think. For one, I like stag. I like the way it looks, and the way it feels in hand. Yet, for the longest time, I only possessed a large Case stockman with the material. It's a fine knife, but rather large, and rather stainless. Not that I dislike stainless, but I am kind of enamored with the idea of the blade aging with the handle.

Now, I also like small knives more than I do large. Two to two and a half inches is my sweet spot, for reasons enumerated here time and again: it's lighter in the pocket, less clutter, etc. So, I waited to see if Case would release a CV Stag peanut. I waited, and waited, and waited. What did my patience get me? Four years of nothing, with the occasional glance at the Bay.

As luck would have it, GEC released the Pemberton. I adore the shape of the blade (I like the pointier tip of the Pem over the gentle up sweep of the 'Nut). I see plenty of acrylic, some very handsome wood, not sure if saw any bone, but no Stag in the original run. A couple weeks after the Pem made its first appearance, I check GEC's site, and see that they had indeed released a Northfield stag version a week prior. My heart started beating. I Googled it, and the first few vendors were sold out. I saw kind of disappointed. The next vendor had them...for something like $175, when the others were $100, when they were in stock. Forget that.

The last vendor I checked had them for $95 and some change, so I snagged it up. This was about three weeks ago, and I haven't let the thing out of my pocket since. Stag, 1095 steel, great profile, superb fit and finish. The only gripe I have is that the pen blade is in front of the clip, making the nail nick a little difficult to access. This is remedied by not trimming my left thumb nail down to the skin, as I am wont to do with my other fingers.

I still love my other knives. I don't own a single one that I won't carry. But, this guy is a keeper, and a constant in my pocket.

My grail is a specific knife. I fell the first time I saw it. Not the most useful, but it is so close to perfection that it haunts me.
