My Grandpa's Knife

Here's my story and thank you for your generosity!!! Last year, to my surprise, my parents gave me an old brass bartender's knife to add to my collection, and according to my grandmother it was her father's knife originally, but was given to my grandfather after some time. My grandmother told me that my great grandfather used the knife to whittle while my grandfather carried it as an EDC before he passed away. It came to me in really dirty/greasy condition, kind of like it had been in a mechanics shop. I washed it out with a little mineral oil and low and behold some old wood splinters came loose from the springs. Kinda neat to think that the splinters could have been lodged in there by my great grandfather himself :)

After getting some of the grime off I was also able to make out the tang stamps, one side reads "Coca Cola Bottling Co. / Germany" while the other says "Kastor & Co." with a four leaf clover emblem. Per my research, Kastor & Co. used these markings between 1893-1902, right around the time period my great grandfather would have still been carrying a pocket knife.

Glen and Nick, those are great stories guys

This thread has a lot of very moving stories.:thumbup:

(By the way, I don't want to be considered as an entrant in your very generous GAW, Mark. Your knife is awesome, but I'm sure there are many who'd appreciate and enjoy that red soup bone barlow much more than I would.)

Congrats to Gary on getting a sweet knife and thanks Mark for the generous giveaway and thanks for the opportunity to show my three most valuable/priceless knives I own and the story behind them. Enjoy your grandfather's knife and treasure the memories, they can be very comforting in times of need.

Thank you Ted for sharing your story, although heart-wrenching for you to go through that at such a young age. I much appreciate your comments. :)

The GAW was just icing on the cake. The stories were the true win!

Thanks to everyone that shared pics and stories!

Wow! I didn't wake up feeling like it was my lucky day, but it is!
Thanks Mark, for your story, for the GAW and for all you bring to the forum.
I don't have a TC Barlow, let alone an anniversary TC Barlow. I'll cherish this one.
