Hi Guys!
I'm back (see other posts), and my fingers are trembling as I try to get all the words down on the screen that have been floating around in my mind since my absence.
This design competition kicks a--, (yes, I'm bragging, but so what). In fact, I like the idea of collaborating instead of "competing." Still, here are the rules for the competition:
1. Start Date: 1 February
2. End Date: 1 March
3. Although you may start threads and post comments, entries must be postmarked and sent to me via snail mail by the end date.
4. All entries should contain the following: an accurate drawing, a materials list, a name for the design, and a short blurb describing your entry's concept/design history, etc. While models in wood or whatever can be submitted, this is not required. In fact, to make it fair for those of us who can't carve wood, models will only help your entry by way of making your ideas clear to the judges. In other words, the sexiest model will not influence the judges!
5. No precious metals or stones could be used (the khukuri as to be sellable to the general public). If the materials needed to complete the design are unavailable in Nepal, the winner will have to supply them.
6) The design would have to be khukuri-based. That is, it must resemble in some way a khukuri (I won't attempt to define that, but it'll be obvious if somebody sends me something that looks like a fork).
Now, about the judging. I'd ideally want the kamis to decide, but that would mean that I'd have to carry all the materials with me (which I don't mind doing). Of course, if the design submitted required unique materials, I would not be able to bring it back with me when I return. In other words, it would have to wait until a future shipment. For this part of the competition, I want your input.
A word on the "special project" that many of you are considering doing (perhaps apart from the competition). That idea sound's great to me. If you can come up with the design by the time I leave, I'll take it to Nepal and have it done (as long as all the materials are available there). You can also collaborate and enter it in the competition.
So, let the games begin (as if I had to say that!).
