My Great Idea: A Design Competition

Hey Blackdog and Coyote, what do you think about putting together wooden prototypes of our designs? If you all want to come up with the blade styles we discussed via our emails, I'll wrap the handles.

Craig, when do you want the entries turned in? Marcus

RA,

Just checked my mail. Nothing there yet. Will check again later and let you know.

Redleg,

The wooden prototype is a great idea. Only problem is I have no woodworking skills. If you can assemble, disassemble or troubleshoot it, I do well. The artistic and creative talents in the household are my wife's department. She has the unique ability to make something beautiful out of the most basic of raw materials. Maybe I can talk her into it.

I guess I'd better start looking for a good Valentine's Day present to help persuade her.

Hi Guys!

I'm back (see other posts), and my fingers are trembling as I try to get all the words down on the screen that have been floating around in my mind since my absence.

This design competition kicks a--, (yes, I'm bragging, but so what). In fact, I like the idea of collaborating instead of "competing." Still, here are the rules for the competition:

1. Start Date: 1 February

2. End Date: 1 March

3. Although you may start threads and post comments, entries must be postmarked and sent to me via snail mail by the end date.

4. All entries should contain the following: an accurate drawing, a materials list, a name for the design, and a short blurb describing your entry's concept/design history, etc. While models in wood or whatever can be submitted, this is not required. In fact, to make it fair for those of us who can't carve wood, models will only help your entry by way of making your ideas clear to the judges. In other words, the sexiest model will not influence the judges!

5. No precious metals or stones could be used (the khukuri as to be sellable to the general public). If the materials needed to complete the design are unavailable in Nepal, the winner will have to supply them.

6) The design would have to be khukuri-based. That is, it must resemble in some way a khukuri (I won't attempt to define that, but it'll be obvious if somebody sends me something that looks like a fork).

Now, about the judging. I'd ideally want the kamis to decide, but that would mean that I'd have to carry all the materials with me (which I don't mind doing). Of course, if the design submitted required unique materials, I would not be able to bring it back with me when I return. In other words, it would have to wait until a future shipment. For this part of the competition, I want your input.

A word on the "special project" that many of you are considering doing (perhaps apart from the competition). That idea sound's great to me. If you can come up with the design by the time I leave, I'll take it to Nepal and have it done (as long as all the materials are available there). You can also collaborate and enter it in the competition.

So, let the games begin (as if I had to say that!).

Blackdog & Coyote,
How are the designs coming? I can't wait to see some more pics! I've been working on some diferent color/material coordinations for the handle wrap. Let me know what your prefs are.

Redleg: Why not visit the "favorite quotes" thread and leave your favorite quote: I have an idea what it may be, if your BF signature is any indication.

What do others think of size? Is bigger always better? Or does a smaller khukri make sense?

Bigger isn't necessarily better. It depends what you use it for. A 20 inch AK is way too much for me to handle, and although it may chop really well, my arm can't go on too long with it. The bigger AK blades are better for chopping but the thinner lighter blades are better for cutting. For cutting brush, my panawal bends the smaller branches back, while the WW2 cuts through them easily. These are just my opinions from my limited experience.

Al,

Do you have any idea on just how MANY days there are in January.

. Craig just sent me his snail-mail address, so I can get mine off.

P.S. Al, check you e-mail too

Rick,

At the moment I can only tell you for sure that there's daytime and nighttime. In the daytime I'm at work, at night I sleep (unless I'm still at work). Things will be better next week, I start night shift. Then I can work at night and sleep during the day (unless I'm still at work). I'm glad I said it out loud. Now it all makes sense to me

.

Marcus,

I don't think there's any limit to the amount of entries you can make. The more the merrier. Also, I didn't have a chance to talk to Craig before he left so I really don't know when he'll be back. I hope it's soon. I hear that the sandwich he left on his desk has taken on a life of its own and the SPCA wants him to either feed it or donate it to science.

Hi guys! With the exception of a trip to Miami during February for a couple of days, I'm back until the big Nepal trip in April.

I did get a question from one of you via email concerning whether or not entries could include construction materials. Here's the scoop:

1) Materials can be mailed for the winning entry.

I hope that helps.

Thought I'd bring this one back to the top since the competition has formally begun.

Did I mention that the winner would receive the prototype as his or her "prize?"

Craig,

Unclear on one thing. If a person wants special handle material for the design competition, do we send it to you before you go, or when you are in Nepal? Not too sure on the Postal Service there, how long does it take to send items over, Customs, etc. Please advise. Two days and counting.

Rick

RA: I wouldn't worry about sending the material to Nepal - it'd probably never get there. Around March, I'll put the word out that anybody who needs any special material brought with their design to Nepal should send it to me here in Virginia. As long as you're not sending me ingots of your favorite steel, I'll be glad to carry it along. I suspect most of what I'd take would be for potential handles?
