My grinder is ugly, but it's done!

Looks great, I hope it gives you a lifetime of service!

If you're burning 6011, we'll give you a break on cosmetics ;) 6010 and 6011 sure dig in deep, but they're definitely not what most would reach for if cosmetics are of concern :D

My only question, is why you didn't go heavier on the two support pieces for the main chassis. Looks like 1/4 X 2 flat bar or so, I'd have recommended something like 1/2 X 4.

Great job, I hope you post some work done on it soon :D

The uprights from the base are 1/4x2. After giving it a little bit of thought I added the brace on the front leg to disperse the pressure. I also ran beads on both sides of the legs, top and bottom. I might add another brace to the rear leg.

I had contemplated all sorts of uprights. Single I beam, single rectangle tube, square tube legs. Then I decided to go with those legs cause I figured it would be the easiest to square up and butt to the receiver and base while keeping the receiver itself square for wheel lineup and "attitude" (think airplanes). That would have sucked if the base was level, and the wheels and platen were twisted to the side by 5deg!

I did not see any flexing while testing and tweaking. I ran it for a long while at all speeds and just watched for everything (from the side of course, fully armored up with the face shield). There is a slight vibration at 5600 fpm but not nearly enough to cause concern. The wheels are balanced pretty good.

Post some work? Heh, I got this puppy done so I can hog some steel off of a 5/16 D2 chopper blank! What was I thinking when I accepted that "challenge".

Talking with a BF member today and gixxer's grinder enters our conversation. In ref to "ugly" the other member's grinder is for sure far "uglier" than gixxer's grinder. Gixxer's design is also excellent.

Gixxer,

As Nick said those weld wires get real good penetration. What the weld looks like on the outside is not as important as what happens to the areas you cannot see. As long as the penetration is there and their are no internal cracks, that machine will last a lifetime. Good job A+

Nice Grinder. Where did you get your VFD? Are you ever going to set it up for hollow grinds?

I got my VFD from here, These are IP20, not NEMA 4

And I do plan on starting off with an 8" wheel when I get up the balls to try it. I have room for possibly a 14" wheel.

I will either get my contact wheels from Rob or this place. I still have to do research though.

Considering all the feedback I have gotten about what I did, I guess it is not that bad looking!! I hope none of the welds fail. I took my time with each one and let everything cool down before I took clamps off. Thanks for the compliments.

Stay tuned next week for a popcorn stag fighter with feather pattern damascus! That grinder WILL make the damascus for me, right?:D;)
