I have contacted Spyderco twice with questions. Neither went particularly well, but both issues resolved themselves without Spyderco's intervention, so I was hoping for some feedback to get perspective on them.

#1
The first one is a VG10 Caly 3.5. Before contacting Spyderco, I posted on their forum asking if grooves on the pivot were normal, as it didn't seem to cause any problems, but the marks are distinct and a bit off putting. Someone said the same thing happened with their Caly 3, it was sent in, and Spyderco replaced the pivot. Hearing that, I contacted Spyderco's CS by email.

The response:

The marks are not normal but taking the blade out (which does void the manufacture warranty) can cause thing to shift a bit and perhaps now the blade is not located exactly where it should be. I've never seen that happen before so I'm not really sure how to be of much help.
Thank you & have a great day.

Notice in the pictures they are precisely the width of the blade of the Caly, so the grooves themselves prove it did not shift. Further, when I got the Super Blue Caly 3.5, the first time I took it apart I checked the pivot to see if it has the same thing, and it did, so it could not be the result of taking it apart.

I haven't noticed anything off about the knife--meaning it doesn't seem to have any effect, at least not yet--but what would your thoughts on having this in a knife be? They are distinct and grow deeper. It's also not a great feeling to be blamed for it when it wasn't my fault, or at least not for the reason they stated. Throw on top that the person hadn't seen it when there's a known example of a Caly 3 having it, and I sent a link to the thread and mentioned that fact when I contacted them.

That was awhile ago. The second one occurred between yesterday and today. I bought a Manix 2 XL awhile ago and liked it enough that I decided to get a replacement. It arrived yesterday, and when I was looking it over, I noticed the tang is dented right along the track of the ball bearing. It is actually so perfectly centered and right on the ridge that I emailed asking if it was an upgrade, i.e., normal now.

Pics of the issue (what I sent in the email):

In case people are wondering if I ruined the older one and bought the new one to pull the ol' switcheroo, here's a pic of the pristine one in front of the older one (note the dirty handles and etched blade of the older one in the background):

and it did truly arrive yesterday:

The response:
You can return it to the place of purchase or you can send it in to us. The dent can occur from spine whacking the blade.

So again I'm blamed, this time for a brand new knife not opened half a dozen times with the email to them sent a few minutes after it arrived. Amazon has a nice return policy (they even pay for shipping, something Spyderco won't do even though they are to blame), so I can skirt dealing with Spyderco.

I guess my main question is have I been unlucky twice dealing with them, or is it normal for them to try to push blame on you? Also, if they've said something similar to you and sent the knife in, did they end up charging you for it or taking your word?

I've dealt with them several times over the years with many Enduras that had, in most folks opinion, severe lock rock/play. It was always "Within acceptable tolerances". I had a lockback fail with hand pressure on an original Manix and they did replace that one, but also insinuated spine whacking in their email.
I know others have had similar experiences, and many have had excellent results too.
Aside from their Military Model, I generally don't like much of their folder line anyway, so it's not a huge issue with me anymore.

I have had vertical play in two of my calys,a 3.5 in super blue and cf 3 zdp. I won't buy anymore moki made spydercos. I didn't send them in because the super blue was a sprint and the zdp I just put away. I did have paramilitary that the lock face didn't engage the lock bar, causing vertical play. The warranty dept sharpened it and sent it back saying it was fine, the play was pretty bad. It was a new knife and I was pissed, I have bought a few more golden made spydercos usually sprints some are great others not so great. The only high quality and consistent spydercos are the Taichung made models and my militaries.

I remember reading once about a person that bought a benchmade 710 off Amazon. He got it and it was in rough shape, he sent it back and they either sent him the same knife back or another guy on the forum got the bad knife he had sent back for replacement. That is nuts. Maybe someone at Spyderco wasn't having a good day or was at a different station that day.

It's simple, don't take apart your knives, and don't spine whack...

Seriously though. I've only dealt with them once for replacement screws for my Para 2, and they sent them plus a catalog, pricing guide, and a calender. I have however had bad experiences with the USA made QC... The Sage 1 I had was near flawless.

I was wondering about that, if it was a return. It looks pristine, though--no marks or dirt on the G10, no track mark on the tang from the ball traveling there, etc. I'm not sure the dent is the result of a sphere hitting it either; it looks like whatever hit it had a longer flat section, but I could be wrong. Another thing is at least on my other one, the ball travels past that section--and thinking about it, it wouldn't be very secure if it locked up right on the edge there, so to be the result of a spinewhack, you'd have to hold the ball pulled back to place it right on the edge there. I doubt it's truly the result of a spinewhack.

Outsourced= having someone make your product instead of making it yourself. Japan, Taiwan, China in the case of Spyderco. Its to make production "cheaper" (feel free to define this word as you will). Golden, CO is "in-house" made. If the knife was made in Golden they could say "oh 'Bill' assembled those. Lets ask 'Bill'." Otherwise it's speculation and assumption.
