A few months ago, I made my own heavy-duty Mora using a Mora 746 handle and a Helle blade blank- the Helle-Mora was born.
Here is the review:
First off the balance is much better with the larger blade. The balance point of the standand 746 is ~3/4" further back on the handle.
Next some of the standard tests that everyone seems to like to do.
Fuzzys
Paper fuzzy's
Drilling
Batoning - the cardboard was tougher than it looks!
This guy almost got away, but the Helle blade glided effortlessly into it's hide. Next stop, over the mantle in the family room.
Comparison shot of the Helle-Mora next to a Clipper and a Falkniven S1
Overall, I really like this knife. These shots were taken over a month ago and since then I've done a lot more misc. cutting in the woods and around the house and I'm really impressed with this blade. It holds it's edge well and after use, a few swipes on the strop and it's stupid sharp again. For the $14 for the 746 and the $22 for the blade, I have a $36 knife that's good for 99% of what I need in a knife.
PS. I also made a bushcraft-style sheath for it, but since it was only my second homemade leather sheath, it's not quite "post-a-pic" quality, but it works well.
