Hello everyone. I'm new here but been a long time lurker. :)

I have learned a ton from reading these forum posts and thought I would hit you all up for some advice.. I have been on the fence about trying to find a new edc hard use folder. I have been really loving my byrd cara cara 2, spyderco tenacious and buck vantage. But it's time to upgrade.. Mostly edc and lots of cardboard cutting and garden use. Thanks in advance everybody!

I could recommend whatever folder I like, which is easy and very unhelpful for you, or I can suggest you go to the custom makers' folders for sale subforum and you'll get two things:

1. A unique, custom made knife (in all price ranges, materials, and styles).
2. An investment piece, because most of the makers on this forum are either made men or well on their way.

You're welcome!

Welcome to the Forums, JT!

Try a full flat-ground Spyderco Delica 4. Just don't be a knucklehead with it... ;)

Welcome to the forums - glad you joined in finally. -

All I can say unless you are made of money? I probably would not use a custom from any one in the garden.......:eek::rolleyes:

BUT - you could if you REALLY wanted too? :D

I'm sure you will find something here that floats your boat? If you can't you got problems?:)

I have definitely considered the ffg delica/endura but I'm just not all that convinced that I'm gaining that much over my already highly used cara2. Enlighten me!

You know what, JT? You're right. I've had a few Cara Cara 2's and they are very good knives and even better for the price. I admit that there are only three things better on the Spyderco Delica/Endura, imo: better steel, better warranty, and better deployment hole. I actually like the FRN pattern better on the Byrd gen 2's.

What other criteria do you have in mind for your upgrade?

You are gaining a lot.
You are gaining much better blade steel with better edge retention.
You are getting a Spyderco with great warranty.
It's not made in China.

However, I say the Spyderco Native - s30v steel, nice handles made to fit the hand like a glove, made in USA. You can pick up the Native 5 with s35vn and G-10.

Or pick up the Chokwe or Chaparral - two of my favorites.

I have really been loving my cara2 and tenacious, so to answer your question I would respond with yes, I like spyderco, but I haven't really had to much experience with other brands.. My personal experience amounts to those previously mentioned and my bro's bm grip and a couple buck knives and a couple gerber and a kershaw scallion several years ago.

Oh I guess I should tell you all I prefer to carry tip down in my right side back pocket.. I also seem to favor the larger blades. Though my buck vantage is undoubtedly a good knife, I never seem to find myself reaching for it.

I have recently started including a para2 in my every day carry. For the past year it has solely been a mini grip.

Great cutting blade. Super smooth, can be deployed with the hole or with the lock. Nice fit and finish.

Being a lefty it took a while to figure a way to make the lock work efficiently with one hand. When I play with it right handed it becomes more obvious that the ergonomics are in my opinion, very very good.

This is a job for a Paramilitary 2 or a Military if the former is too small for your liking. A Gayle Bradley might be one to look at too, but it's not stainless although very good steel. Try to find a place to handle a bunch of these knives if you can before buying. Nothing tells you like feeling the right knife in your hand.

Or... You can spend a bit more and wait until this bad boy comes out soon. The Brad Southard Flipper from Spyderco.

Its not cool or exciting, but for the box cutting I would just use a utility knife honestly.

Im not sure about something for garden use, but if you just want a great edc blade I would put my vote in for the Para 2 as well. Awesome blade!

It's hard for me to handle knives because I don't have a cutlery shops within 100 miles of me! Also if anyone has a good place for competitive pricing online please pm me with info.

If you would like to email me I can tell you where I usually buy my knives, if not on the forum. The for sale subforum usually has great deals though. My email is ares1307@live.com ..I know how you feel about the Tenacious, that is a great knife for a great price. The Endura 4 has a bigger blade if thats something you like, I have an Endura 4 as a camping/fishing hard use folder. I would also recommend a Zero Tolerance 350, that is a great knife and is very tough. Not to mention its S30V.

Seems like the more I learn about knives the harder my decision becomes.. Anyone have a side by side comparison of the para2 and millie?
