My Kershaw Cryo is magnetic.

Wow, radioactive 8Cr13MoV. *looks at my Opinel* Hope that things not gonna glow in the dark....

Things deemed harmful in the last few decades: Cell phones/other wireless electronics, powerlines, trans fats, cholesterol, carbohydrates, computer monitors, microwave ovens, processed foods, plasitc beverage and food containers, vaccinations, most of the medicines we commonly use, fluoridated/chlorinated water, and now Chinese steel. Let's see...What else can we possibly come up with to worry about? I think cotton clothing, pets, lettuce, copper vases, leaves on 99% of all trees, pencils, paperclips, facial tissues, clowns, aluminum foil, rubber erasers, paper grocery bags, plastic grocery bags, wheat, peanuts, olive oil, water, shower curtain rings, drapes, grapes, apes, watermelons, kiwis, strawberries, oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes, and especially otters are all full of scary and deadly toxins as well. Oh, the humanity...:D

You forgot these:

But seriously, what is the connection between trace radioactivity and magnetism?

Yup, it's been discussed a few time about the levels of radiation.

However, it would not be possible for the magnatism to be associated.

Now just a minute here. I take my otters very serious. You Sir have crossed the line. :)

It's not just Kershaws. My Benchmade 710 is slightly magnetic as well. The edge is being held almost horizontal to the table top. I was holding the camera a little funny so it might not look that way.

Yes.....thank you.
Hmm... I work at a Nuclear Power Plant, I'll take one of my 8Cr13Mov knives with me tonight and scan it with a radiation detector, and go through a contamination detector with it in my pocket and see what happens.

I suspect that any radiation in Chinese knife is not enough to give you cancer or cook your balls, but I'm sure that Kershaw or any other 8Cr13Mov user would not want to have to field questions about it. I suspect that the magnetism is just random that happens in some batches of knives.

Perhaps it has to do with the coating applixcation method which I believe is magnetic

Well, went into work tonight and took one of my China knives with me. I ran it through multiple, sensitive radiation detectors and nothing was measured. I also processed through a few different PCM's (personnel contamination monitors) and once again, nothing was measured. I also scanned a co-workers Tenacious, and nothing showed up.

It is caused by a magnetic chuck they use when they grind the metal flat on a surface grinder.

You can buy a cheap demagnetizer

Relax, folks.

In a machine shop it is very common for your tools to pick up a mild magnetism. The transformers and AC motors powering the machines work on the princible of coils of wires with AC current producing magnetic fields.

Pretty much everything ferrous in my shop becomes slightly magnetic eventually. It's not a big deal, it just makes things fuzzy from picking up steel grinding dust. As dave and Tinbasher said, it's easily remedied.

My Delica is also a bit magnetic. I didn't notice this before but it's interesting indeed.

At least a couple of you know ! With steel ferrite, martensite are ferromagnetic and austenite is not .Blades are normally martensite .In the manufacturing process various thinngs magnetize the blades James and Tinbasher have the answers ! I've found that a magnetic blade is sometimes usefull to pick up a small screw etc .

While I find the concept of the Chinese making radioactive knives to fry the testicles of unsuspecting US knife lovers to be intriguing, I find the fact that there is growing proof that mood can be manipulated by magnetic fields (both for the good, and for the bad) to be a much better conspiracy theory...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcranial_magnetic_stimulation

Theories abound about the possibility of using this as a wide area weapon since the fields can also cause nervousness, lack of concentration, etc. depending on frequencies.

I had an MRI of the brain a few years back and my pineal gland was calcified which is a common cause of not sleeping well in older folks. This is probably more common in America due to flouridation.

"Calcification of the pineal gland is typical in adults, and has been observed in children as young as 2. Calcification rates vary widely by country and tend to increase by age, with calcification occurring in an estimated 40% of Americans by their 17th year.[4" - Wiki

So's all those people who wore the tinfoil helmets while they ranted about flouride and black helicopters were kinda right?

Our physical evolution has been tied to our informational evolution for some time. Maybe we will interact with the magnetic fields and chemicals we produce as we interact with our memes and knowledge to produce... well.. who knows what.

And may Bob have mercy on our soul.

How was that Powernoodle?

Most interesting. And I do agree with this assertion from the abstract that you cite: "The human brain has been designed . . . ."

That just proves that even when I lie through my teeth, I still turn out to be right. I'm just that good.

Don't know if you have read any Terrance McKenna. In an interview where he defends(?) his theory of psilocybin mushroom spores travelling through space and sparking human intellectual evolution the interviewer asks him (challengingly), "And you really believe that, huh?"

McKenna answers "Hell no, but it gets you thinking doesn't it?"

Your rants bear some similarity, that is a compliment.

Most of the Chinese blades are made using recycled steel from nuclear power plants, so in addition to being magnetic, its also highly radioactive. In fact, 8Cr13MoV is the International Atomic Energy Agency's designation for high chromium steels suitable for reactor and containment vessel applications. Most people don't know this. See pp. 159 - 161 here: link. Kershaw uses 8Cr13MoV because the Chinese government actually pays them to take it away. Its a great deal for Kershaw, but if you've ever wondered why your jeans pocket disintegrates in the exact spot where you carry that Chinese blade, now you know.

Yup. Get your Geiger counter. They are mildly radioactive too.

My ZT 0560 has an odd magnetic field. When it was in my Wicked Edge for a cleanup of the factory edge (kept the same angle, just made it more even and sharper), the filings collected on the blade in an almost tigerstripe pattern

I hadn't seen that happen to other knives before
