My KITH WIP

I finished chasing the scratches and did the final assembly tonight. I'm very pleased so far. This thing is SHARP. It cut me twice during final assembly.

I have a functional carrying sheath under development. It's not very pretty, but it fits like a glove. I'll finish it out over the next couple of days so I can show the knife off before I have to send it off.

Wow, you actually made a knife that is a KNIFE...and a mighty fine one at that!!!

Why thank you. What's more, I enjoyed the project. Not saying I'll make another just like it, but perhaps the future does contain more knife projects. :)

This might amuse you, or you might think I'm being pretentious. I found some blank certificate forms, so I decided to create a certificate of authenticity that I will ship along with the knife. It includes pertinent information about the knife, a picture of it, and my signature. :)

Okay, maybe a bit pretentious. ;)

Great piece, and I don't think the certificate is pretentious at all. It may never matter, but it may matter a lot at some point in the future. I'm very impressed with it.

So I was thinking I was pretty much done except for a quickie sheath. I've finished the knife, I've received my presentation box from Jantz, and I'd printed my certificate...

Then I decided to have a closer look at the box to see if I could make it more securely hold the knife. I was taken aback by what I saw.

Looks like my old pillow making skills are going to come in handy again, because I will NOT send out a presentation box put together this cheaply.

I spent a fair amount of time yesterday sewing replacement "pillows" for the presentation box using some dark gray fabric I had and some foam padding. I'll cut the story short by saying it did not work as expected and the results are now in the trash (along with the original red felt that came with the box).

The more I thought about this the more I felt I needed to put something in the box that would hold the dagger in place so it wouldn't get scuffed. I thought about custom forming the foam padding, but that leads to the problem of getting the decorative cover to adapt to the formed shape.

The idea I'm pursuing now is a sort of pillow with a built in sheath. Of course the cover would be made of leather and the sheath custom fitted to the blade. I'm fairly certain I can pull this off and it should look nice too as well as serve the utilitarian purpose. If nothing else, it will give me a chance to use up some of the leather I've been carrying around for so many years.

I decided to use the sculpted foam covered with suede for the presentation box. I think it came out looking quite nice and will definitely protect the knife during shipment.

Thanks, guys.

Sam, to answer your questions... I bought the leather nearly 20 years ago. I'd be lying if I said I remember anything about what the sign said about it. I do have an account on Knifedogs, but I never seem to remember to visit that site.
