Everyone else has been showing their home made knives so I figured I should play along and post a few of the ones I just completed.

The one on the left was inspired my by EDC folder the Spyderco Navigator II. The other two were my own design. The three knives are all stock removal. The ax is just something I purchased and made the handle for. There are some imperfections when you see them up close, but they cut well and should be good knives to use when I don't want to mess up my expensive ones. I didn't put in a whole lot of time sanding them perfectly or anything like that as these were my first try at making knives and I may beat on them a little. I will probably put it more effort on the second round and try to make some that looks nice in addition to being functional.

Hey, thats pretty good work! Its really a neat thing to make your own knife huh?

Hey those are cool. I really like the little guy in the middle. I have about 3 or 4 knives just like that at my lakehouse. They work great on catfish.

thanks for the compliments guys.

I had never thought of using that little guy on fish. Thats a good idea though :)

Good stuff. i wish I had the tools and talent to make a knife. the results would probably be disastrous though :D

It doesnt take a whole lot to make knife (well at least one that functions, it may not look pretty). To make these knifes I used a vise, hack saw, grinder (only $120 from Lowe's), drill, band saw or some way of cutting wood (a hack saw would work), a few files, and some sandpaper. I think that is a complete list. I brought them to a local metal shop to be heat treated as I don't have the means or talent to do that yet.

If you can ever get your hands on enough tools, I highly recommend you try making one even if you feel it will turn out poorly. Its a rewarding experience.

if you are using 1095 heat treat is pretty simple to get the hang of...i am an idiot and i can do it...all my knives so far are holding up really really well...

tools needed.. MAPP gas torch...FIRE BRICK at least one...magnet on end of screwdriver or stick, pickup tool works great...quench agent...i use heated old motor oil..95 135 degree range...vice grips...

heat the metal to cherry red...check to see if the metal is no longer magnetic..if yes continue to heat for around one more minute... place in oil really fast... let sit in oil for 10 minutes or so..take out of oil and let cool for longer.. preheat oven to 375 clean off oil..with brillo pad or san paper..place in oven to temper for 45-55 minutes... take out and cool... check the edge with any method you choose be brass rod or metal file...shapen and enjoy!!!
