Yes the flap does serve a purpose, It holds the knife part of the sheath to the flap so it won't slap up and down when worn. The back part of the sheath and the flap are one piece, it is folded over at the top to form the loop.

Darren, thanks for getting back to me on the sheath design.

And I just have to say again, that your work is exquisite. It also really gives me the feeling of being in the Old West...I can almost smell the sagebrush!
