This is knife #17 for me. It was ground from 1/8" 1080 and is about 8 inches long. The handle is maroon linen Micarta with red spacers and 3/16" brass pins. I tried for a mirror finish, but just couldn't get rid of the hairline scratches. Still lots to learn about this biz. Opinions desired- pro and con.

I desire larger pictures. It's kinda hard to see anything about the knife with small pictures. But from back here, it looks pretty good. I'm not sure if I like the spacers on it, but that's just my feeling on all spacers.

Looks pretty well done to me. I'd round out the handle a little more, and/or add some contour if it was me.

That handle looks pretty blocky to me. I'd take a contact wheel and put some curves in it. The rest of the blade from what I can see looks pretty good. Thanks for lettin' us check it out...

Heh...you'll change your tune on spacers once you realize that they can "fix" a tang/handle junction that just won't get QUITE flat ;)

Milt,

Looks pretty good from here. I like the Material choice and it looks like your proportions and symmetry are pretty good. Take it out and use it a bit and see if there are any "hot spots" on the handle. Just because something looks a little square (as folks have been saying) doesn't necessarily mean it's not comfortable.

Keep it up!

Thanks guys. The blocky comment seems to be a reoccurring one. I have been using a flex belt in the slack area to contour the edge. Should I be doing this on the wheel? I will post larger pictures next time.

That looks like very clean work Milt. While I would round off the handle some more too, you will find your own parameters for that. As suggested, putting the knife to work in your own hand will go a long way to guiding those decisions. I use a wheel with coarse grit for basic shaping, then a slack belt, then sand and finish by hand. When hand sanding I usually back the paper with a bit of 9 oz leather, which supports the paper more than my fingers do.

Here's a handle I like. This could be criticized because of the sharp edge going around the tang; that's just showing off and not something you'd do for an actual working knife.

I also would like to see the pins re-centered a bit but again that is a personal preference. I think this is a nice clean knife and would be pleased to have it myself. In fact, should you decide on some objective user testing, just send it on over. ;) Thanks for sharing your work Milt, and keep it coming.

Thanks, Dave. Your comments are very useful, and rather heartfelt, I feel. I have done some work to the handle and blade, and will get a photo taken later this evening. What exactly did you mean by "re-centering the pins?"

Milt

Hi Milt; I just meant moving the pins forward a bit so they are more evenly distributed between the front and back of the handle. Does that make sense?

Yes. I will do that next time. Take a look at my new post. I worked on the knife.
