My latest eBay find

I loved the knife and but it is a very problematic model. Don't remove the clip unless you don't want to use the clip ever again. The screws go straight into the micarta and will strip out quickly. It's a major design flaw. It was so bad, in later catalogs, Smokey Mountain even advertised it as having a non-removable pocket clip.

If you are going to use it regularly, don't do lots of hard openings or prying. Some Jots developed blade play pretty quick and with the pinned construction it is not easy to fix.

You can still by the Jot new in box. A friend saw one in a KS hardware store last month...complete with lock-up problems right out of the box.

I'm just gonna carry it. It's a 99 model and has early, tight lock-up. I've already read about the hard use issue with this model on the Spyderco forum. So it won't probably cut much at all.
I found a mint in box one too and it's on it's way to me. That one will just be put up.
Hopefully it will have as good of lock-up as this one does. It's from 4/99 just like it is.

I suppose if one of this model has a lock-up problem, it would have a liner that goes over way too far? (There is an angle on the base of the tang on the one I have, that keeps the liner well over)
I've got that brand new in box one coming and I'm a bit worried it will be like that. At least I have a 7 day return period on it. I'd as soon not send it back. But, if it's got poor lock-up back it's going to go.
I guess I lucked out on the other one as it locks up early and tight. The entire knife is solid and tight. -Thanks for the information on the clip. I probably would have never removed them, but it's still good to know all you can about your knives.

I got the NIB one just now and the lock-up is fine. Just like the used one.
It came with everything, like the used one (box, papers) and it even had the catalog, shown here opened to the page the Jot is on. The NIB one is at the bottom.

The NIB lock-up problem was bladeplay when locked open. I've seen the problem with the liner going over too far problem in mine, but it came about after use.

Both I have are dead tight and early lock-up.
I've read the early run had a problem, these are both the last year of production.

I used to have 4 of those C-40 Jot Khalsa models. It seems like the plain edge is a lot easier to find than the serrated version of that older, late nineties Spyder. It's made with GIN-1 blade steel which I always kind of liked. It was produced when Spyderco was making some of their premium models with ATS-34. I liked the GIN-1 just as good as I did ATS-34.

The only riff I had with that knife was that it seemed that the handle was just a bit small for my hand. I imagine that would fit a girl's hand very well. That would be a really cool EDC. Probably my 2 favorite Spyders of that era were the original JD Smith model and the big Calypso.

Congratulations on the find
