Hello all,

Here's my latest knife. Not my normal knife but was a request from a coworker. It's inspired by the Clinch Pick. This thing is wicked sharp.

It's O1 tool steel, convex edge, Micarta handles. Not so sure about the Pikal edge setup but I do have to admit that this little thing is growing on me. I've already received another order for one.

Any and all comments are welcome as I'm here to learn and progress.

Thanks,

Charlie

Overall I'm a fan, really nice work, but (there's always a "but" isn't there) I do not like the fact that there is nothing as far as pins in the front of the knife. Fine if you are using hidden pins but scary if not. Blade may be just a tad large for the handle in proportion as well but that could be because I'm not used to looking at that style.

I'm with you on the two pins. That was honesly a best fix for a mistake of mine. I had forgotten to drill the pin holes before HT and couldn't get one further up.

Thanks for the comments.

Iv'e done the same thing. Next time use a carbide cutter in your dremel. It'll take a bit to get it through, but once through you can shape the hole suprisingly easily.
Man that handle is just itching to be squeezed!

So, when you grip the knife, the sharpened edge is on the top? That is how it looks to me. I have seen knife experts who will actually hold a knife with the edge up. I can think of lots of uses where edge up (on a single edge) would be useful. Back cuts, when you stab upward, the edge is upward to cut.

if you made the handle grip neutral (where edge up or down was comfortable) then you could hold it either way you needed to for whatever type of cut you were doing.

Did you epoxy the handles on, in addition to the pins? With modern epoxy, I would not worry about it at all. And if the handles come off, just have your friend give it back to you and fix it.

Looks like the edge is up to me too, not sure how I feel about that, guess I've never had a use for a reverse cut like that. I do like the profile and the handle looks very comfortable, would make a mean utility knife with the edge going down.

Yeah, the edge goes up.

This is the knife it was inspired by. http://www.shivworks.com/articles/ClinchPick/ClinchPickLarge.asp The coworker wanted me to copy it exactly and I told I would not do that but would make one inspired by.

It's used in a specific type of defensive skill set. Definitely would take a bit for me to get used to. I think I'm going to make one for myself with the bottom edge sharpened. I think that would be nice.

Oh, and yes the scales are epoxied on as well. Didn't think about the carbide dremel bit, I have them, but was trying to get this completed for him. I've been working on it for several months and felt bad. He's tickled to death with it.

I appreciate everyones comments. I'm normally more into EDC, camp knives, and skinners with a few larger tacticals thrown in. This was fun though.

Odon sounds good. Looking for other opinions as well.

Thanks,

Charlie

Oh crap! the edge is one the top??

That was sort of my thought as well when I first saw the Clinch Pick. I believe it's called a Pikal or something like that. It's based on a certain Martial Arts system of slashing and hooking for defensive purposes. Would definitely require some retraining on my part to be able to use.

When I make one for myself I'm going to sharpen it traditionally. I think I'll like it then.

Cousin Jack on the forum has been selling pikal style blades for a while, and Spyderco has a folding version of the Disciple. The knife is held in reverse grip with the cutting edge toward the wielder. I believe South Narc compares striking with it to a sewing machine action.
