And I picked them up from the post office today. I like them! I typically buy two of the new models so I can safe queen one and carry the other. That was the case here. You never know how long new models will stick around, so . . .

The knife was a little smaller than I anticipated although I knew it was a smallish knife. They came in a box that is sized somewhere between a Ladybug and standard box. The ergos are not typical Spyderco but work well with a three finger grip, middle, ring, pinky, then the index finger on the bottom bolster area and the thumb on the thumb ramp. The handle is roomier than a Mini-Grip. Each of mine have a different Build/Date code. I got GI and FI. IMHO, the FI I have is the superior knife but in minor ways of course. The GI will be my carry and the FI will be the safe queen. The finish on the blades is very good. Overall fit and finish are excellent!

The FI has a slightly better grind but that isn't a ding on the GI grind. Mainly where the FI supersedes the GI is in the lockbar fit. The FI locks up a tad earlier and is smooth. The GI sticks a tiny bit and locks up a fraction later. The sticking lockbar will works itself out of course. It's very minor. The lockbar on the Leafstorm is thinner than other new Spyderco models so there isn't a lot of wiggle room for a super early lockup anyway. You can see the comparison pictures below against the Sage 2 and then there are some pictures of each Leafstorm side by side. In the pictures of the lockup with each Leafstorm side by side, the knife on the right is the FI build. The size of the Leafstorm doesn't bode well as a heavy use knife anyway so I suspect the lockbar thickness is adequate while other elements of the knife may be overkill such as the pivot and the blade stock thickness. What seems different to me is you may notice the blade stock appears thicker on the Leafstorm than the Sage 2 but the lockbar is thinner than the Sage 2. The lockup on both is rock solid in all directions.

I know the Leafstorm is a special designer build and the Sage is a Spyderco design with various lock mechanisms so we have to respect the designer's parameters so no complaint here. The Ti stock on the Sage 2 is just plain thicker.

The knife carrys pretty low for not being a Spyderco wire clip and my watch is a very large Invicta Russian Diver's Watch (52MM) and you'll notice the watch and knife are almost the same size!

Each Leafstorm came shaving sharp.

Please excuse the packaging oil in some of these pictures. I JUST got these from the Post Office and just barely cleaned them up. And the "love marks" on my Sage 2 are because it's my carry knife (one is the safe queen) but the bulk of what you see is what happens to a Sage 2 after a cycle in the washing machine!

On to the pictures. There will be four posts of pictures. Sorry for the numbers but I tried to get some pictures for you that matter, not just porn. Ask away if you have any questions.

Great pics.....very few guys can wear a 52 mm watch which is why the Leaf Storm looks tiny. Still waiting on my two.

awsome pics & review, buy the way, how do you think the leafstorm compares to the benchmade mini grip, if you have one or handled it?

great pics! :)

a sweet looking knife.

have you tried carrying the Leafstorm in your jeans' watch pocket? i read that this is how Kevin Wilkins originally intended this knife design to be carried.

Overall, the Leafstorm is a much better knife based on the sum of the parts but the Mini Grip is $85 cheaper, albeit lower cost materials. If I could choose either with money not a factor, I'd of course take the Ti framelock with G-11 and S30V. But the Mini Grip is a top value in its price range . . .

No! But great idea. I never heard that. I'll try tomorrow

Great pictures Reeek. Welcome back from vacation. That Leafstorm looks as big as a Ladybug in your hand.:D

Just ordered mine about 30 min ago...now the wait begins..hahaha:barf: This will be an interesting change. I've been EDCing a small sebenza since Dec 08.

It sure is a little guy, but damn does it look robust. The cutout on the framelock is quite thick isn't it? It looks like a mini tank.

Reeek

How are you finding the Leaf Storm as an EDC user...holding...cutting ?

I got mine yesterday and have to carry/use it for a couple of days to see how it works out. Won't be comparing it to my other EDC rotation as it is different design and I really like the look.

I've carried one every day since Monday now. I like it's size. I always have a few other knives in my portable BOB if I need a longer blade but I seldom do for my EDC. I like it just fine! The blade whittles paper too ;)

They may be different knives but do to the similar pricing I think some degree of competition is inevitable, so in your opinion, which do you prefer the Leafstorm or the Sage 2?

BTW your Sage 2 looks like its getting some love, great to see!

That's easy, I like the Sage 2 more. It's the perfect size EDC IMHO. More cutting egde, it has open construction, I'm a huge proponent of Spyderco's finger choil, the Ti slabs are very well finished and very thick, it's FFG, rides super deep, built like a little tank and looks good with the "love marks". The fit and finish is superb on the Sage 2 as well. It's a poor man's Seb ;)

The weakest parts in the Leafstorm's design, IMHO, are the short cutting edge, the sharp, dramatic and abrupt plunge at the choil (watch your index finger here) and the absence of a secure place for your index finger, although the bolster area is somewhat flat which helps. Comparing the Leafstorm to the Mini Grip in geometry, the flat"tish" bolster area for the index finger is why the Leafstorm has more usable real estate on the handle than the Mini Grip. I'll post a picture in a minute.

Obviously these two knives do not compete but the geometry comparison can be handy. There is a much more secure feel to the grip on the Leafstorm because of the flat front bolster area for the index finger which allows the handle to fill the hand more but you get a lot more blade with the Mini Grip.
