A while back I posted about my new shop woes and my LG 50#. Well, after having to repour the babbit several times (never poured babbit before) I got it running yesterday. Still working on the timing, but it does move steel. I had no help, had to learn about the babbit work from the info on the Littlegianthammer.com pages. First few pours did not work too well. Today I fired up the forge, my homebuilt, and banged out some KSO's. I picked up a bunch of old leaf springs to learn on. I do have "real steel, but needed something to find out how the hammer worked. The springs actually do harden, acts like 5160 but it's only for practice. Banged out about a 12" blade from 6" of spring in about 20 minutes. Slow, but I'm learning.
Here's a picture of the hammer. I built the safety screen also. Shop pictures have to wait until I get the rest organized.

Sounds good Chip!

I just looked up babbit bearings, as it was new to me. Sounds like you had quite a task to pull off. When do we see pix of the metal your pounding on?

All the best, Phil

Here's mine.
You can see I made it 'wrap around' the side a bit because I often work from the sided on this hammer.
