so im doing a little update on my "little" custom bush hatchet.a few people on my other thread planted a seed in my mind to do some more mods......here is what ive come up with, let me know what you guys/gals think:D

p.s. ill be ading more photos as the work continues, thanks again to everyone who commented on it before:thumbup:

I like it, bearded axes always appealed to me. I might curve the edge a little though.

Looks cool. If you leave the bit straight, it will basically be a carpenter's hatchet. Which is an awesome tool.

yeah i havent decided if i want to leave it straight .i have defenately been thinking about curving it,but then there is a part of me that wants to leave it straight...good thing i have another identical one thats untouched:D

Hey man I have a little bush hatchet myself that I use for all the small tasks around the house and landscaping business. I will post a pic below but anyway my question is how did you get the finger grips in the handle? Like was it hand tools or something like a lathe? I would love to do something like that but I am mostly limited to hand tools. Also do you think it would be possible to do it on my handle?

thats awesome! to answer your question,i did all the work by hand with rasps/files and a ton of sand paper in a multitude of grits.i am very limited in my workspace and tools. i live and do all my axe/hatchet work in a 20' toyota huntsman mini-rv(that i share with my girlfriend and dog).the handle i used was just a large straight framing hammer handle.all in all the work on the handle took me about 6 hrs. give or take an hr. im positive you could do something similar with yours,i will make a video of the next one i do and show my process.and of course ill have more pics and vids of this thing in the near future:D

well it ought to work, if not an old hatchet isn't too high priced and you could make another, but that will probably happen anyway.

so here is where im at....

work station and cutting tool

after awhile i finally got the basic shape cut out

just a rough cut. time for the file...

after some filing still needs some finishing

let me know what y'all think so far:D
hope you enjoy and maybe get inspired to do some custom mods:D

I'll def have to try it out as I have no shortage of files, sandpaper, and elbow grease haha. Thanks for the info and suggestions though.

The hatchet is coming out amazing man. Great job cutting out that section on the head. I know that wasn't too easy. Keep up the good work and I'm tuned in to see the finished product

so i took the hatchet out for her maiden test voyage into the great oregon wilderness:D
after a short time hiking around with it in my pack and my machette in hand. i soon switched the two and found the hatchet to be a much better tool for the thick underbeush we have out here. it made real short work of the vine maples and blackberry brambles. so far im very happy with the preformance:thumbup:
