I slip this on my belt along with my Canteen, pouch with nesting canteen cup along with my RC4 simple ,light weight little wood bumming or Trail kit :D
I am still tinkering with the kit trying to get it right for me, I am going to try out the different firestarting methods and see which 2 I am going to leave in my kit,the single hand operating orange one is a staying and I am leaning towards the magnesium bar as a keeper as well, nothing agaist the others ,trying to get it right... I removed the folding saw(using it as a striker with another set up) Sorry I did not get pics of the fishing kit ,I added some more line, few lures, hooks, weights.I could of saved space by removing Fishing kit from tin and placing contents in small zip bag.? I dont know.. I can go back and toss in a few bandages, and Thanks to Don R. I up graded my Compass ,instead of using the standard one.I can lash this one to the kit or my arm and provides general direction in a glance. Again always tinker with stuff to no end LOL :D
Exterior Dimensions:

Whatcha think of it so far ?

Looks very good. I have snare wire in mine too....I guess one of these days I need to go out and play with it to see if I could really catch anything. Otherwise, I'm going to have to figure out a way to put a rifle in my OtterBox 2000!

How are you liking the Holt OtterBox Carrier?

You're pretty much ready for anything that Texas has to offer with that kit on your side. For the last week I've spent a good portion of several days in the woods reviewing some new folders for TK and working on skills. This time of the year in Alabama all you really need is a knife, a ferro rod, a poncho and a cheap plastic water bottle to get along comfy and have fun doing it. Fishing kit is a real plus if you're by a creek or pond. You can stay out there for a long time and never come home until you get tired of eating your own cooking over a campfire!

Snaring and fishing are actually the easiest methods for catching anything around here. I've also heard that a piece of bait cord on a hook suspended just a little higher than a turkey's head will reach can produce some good results. ;)

Derrick,
I really like the holder seem pretty well made,Iwould not expect anything less from you guys..

Jeff ,
Thanks for the comments, I have alot of ponds, streams, creeks etc around me so a fishing kit is a big plus for me.

Those little government issue wrist compasses are really nice, aren't they? That one was in a foil-like pack for 15 years! I opened it a few years ago for another article on my website, that one was issued to USAF Airmen or US Army chopper pilots. I had another one and the "crystal" was crunched on it and it was still accurate! My son beat the snot out of it and it was still good to go so at least you know if you take a spill, it should survive it even if it appears to be FUBAR'd.

I think you are doing good and this kit along with the water bottle kit that you and Jake have made up are some of my favorite kits I have seen yet.

That's a nice leather harness! How much do those cost and do you have a link to them?

I have also heard from a lot of family down in Virginia and Kentucky that a regular old .22 Long Rifle will reliably kill white tail deer. :D

On another note, my Dad loved frog legs and I was messing around, being a ditch pig when I was younger, with a fishing rod in a ditch with some flies (fly fishing flies) and if you hover a fishing fly over frogs, they will take them!

Interesting about the turkey though! Turkey is one of my favorite food groups. :)

Derrick at KSF has the Otter box 1000 & 2000 with holders.
I have the 1000 w/holder also and made a fire kit & fishing kit only out of it for my son....
as far as the compass Don it is Kick ass Brother Thank you !

The name, "Holt" is the name of an otter's den. I wanted to call it an OtterSkin, but the Otter people objected. :(

LOL ,prolly due to it reminded them of Condoms...remember the Sheep skin condoms ... man those we're comfy... :p sorry I thread jacked my own thread :D

I have it in my maxpedition water bottle set up.... and would not fit in here ,I prefer pencil over pen

I have Moleskine mini-notebooks and some Rite-in-the-Rain spiral tablets, I wish those two companies would put out a product together! A Rite-in-the-Rain Moleskine! Fisher Space Pens and a pencil too...

Excellent Saw - Anyone who has one of these with two split rings, make sure you swap out one of the split rings for a smaller size. Uneven split rings ballance better as a trap trigger. If you've got the fabric hangle type, lose the fabric handles. I've never seen a sensible explanation for why BCB changed their product).

Flint Strikers - Why three of them?! Are you nuts? And will you ever, in your entire life, use that much magnesium? And in all honest, how many people hear can say magnesium is any good at all? Let's face it. magnesium is crap at best. You're better off losing two of your strikers and the magnesium block, and carry wet fire tinder cubes and big half inch thick rubber bands.

Picture the scene - It's pissing down with rain, has been all day. Your soaked to the knees and you're poncho is swimming with water. Everywhere you move, you squelch. You know what it's like, you've all been there. You string up your emergancy heat sheet as a temporary shelter, or worse, you string up your $1 Disney World disposable poncho, and you set about building a fire beneath it. But you can't get a damn spark from your spark stick? Why would any other spark stick in that situation be an improvement or a backup? Now a lighter and wetfire tinder, or a rubber band, is at least a better option for shitty conditions. Believe me, a fire is no sweeter because you had to slog for an hour to get it going. Getting it going as fast as possible is the aim of any PSK.

Katadyn - Absolutely great. The best damn tablet around. Buy wait... $ hour wait for drinkable water? Do we really need to fear crypto' that much in a last ditch survival situation? And how do you measure your 1 litre of water? Better off doing what all the decent army and aircrew kits do. Pack a roaster bag or two premeasured in litres, or pack a decent ziplock water bag made for the purpose. I prefer traditional puritabs and the roaster bag thing. Cheap as chips and they take up a lot less space. Never cooked in one, but if you can roast a chicken in it, you could probably boil water in it too.

Meds - It's a personal thing, but I'd go for more meds. Imodium for if you get the shitters, Ben's Wipes for getting rid of vampire bats, a damned good pain killer (30mg Codiene/500mg Paracetamol) for when you need to walk on that broken ankle, and a small sauze with impregnated haemostatic agents (I use HemCon, 'cos there's not much worse than tearing your thigh or your working hand on something and not having a quick blood stopper and a good pain killer.

 The more I look at your pickies, the more I realise how much you really want to light fires! You're a real wouldbe pyromaniac. You've got at least six in the picture without looking at the contents of the survival tin!

Good kit. All the bases covered. Good choices for the mkost part and all the components are quality. None of the cheap crap in there. Hope you only ever have to practice and never need to use it.

:D LOL OK 1st off I love fire and you have not seen anything yet ,I bet I have 15 army LMF fire steel 4 scout models 2 mini or BSA if u will &3 RAT fire kits ,3metal match like the ones w/ Izula kit,and 2 BCB that come in the RAT E&E kit... I like the Mag bar and it works 4 me anyways.... Keep staring but my Saw/Snare has two different size rings one is darker than the other... Meds in another pack as is the FAK... this is a ditch my pack type kit... kinda similar to a hollow handle knife kit w/o the BS knife attached. There will NEVER be a PSK that is be all end all of personal survival kits.... you get basics to get by or like most people modify to fit your needs ....:D
