My little PSK

As far as purifying water, what about using coffee filters and bleach ? Aren't the emergency water filters basically paper filters and maybe some charcoal ? And if your talking about emergency situation, its still important to guard against all those little nasty microbes that will cause nausea, vomiting & diarrhea ( all causes potassium (K+) loss ), & dehydrate you. Would you be better off if you didn’t drink that contaminated water at all ? Low serum (K+) effect muscle cells, can cause weakness, cramps, pain, spasms and very low levels can result in paralysis of muscles. Remember its not just skeletal muscles, you have muscles in you gut, that make up the lining of your arteries, your diaphragm is a muscle (causes you to breath), and your heart is a muscle also. I read (BUT never tried) that water in an emergency situation can be filtered through a coffee filter several times and then adding 8 drops of household bleach per gallon of water will help to eliminate microbes and is ok to drink. I have swallowed my share of pool water that had enough bleach to make my dark short turn white, and never had diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. Just to make sure, pack (K+) supplement &/or electrolyte replacements in your kit.

Ah, I see - very cool, I couldn't see that in the first pic, but that is exactly what I was thinking of...

That is a really good looking kit. I have just started to look at buying/building one for myself.

Tony,

Great kit. The only item I would add would be a SAK. One of the ultra thin ones, even a Companion would do, thou I would be more likely to add a 84mm Lumberjack (Alox) or a 74mm. Even a Sentry would do.

I have one in every single kit I have made, and it is the one item I would never want to do without, ever.

I had a farmers in there but removed it due to no matter where I go I have the SAK Hiker on me in my front right pocket ,so the knife issue is never really an issue for me... :D Plus I could not fit my fishing kit in the box w/SAK in there...
