So I have spent a couple afternoon's working on this thing, and it's finaly looking like something. Its a 1x42. will build a flat platen, and figure out something for slack grinding/contouring(probably just a removable platen, and between two small rollers). It's kind of a r+d model, with future hopes to build a 2x72, or maybe something even larger.

Comments, Critiques, Suggestions encouraged, I am a newb at this stuff.

Soft wheels will help you a ton when you get this thing going. Doesn't Bader make some 1" wide rubber clad wheels? would be cool if you could make it somehow Bader wheel compatible.

Preety cool. I agree with Los Angeles about a softer wheel. I think that USA Knifemaker Supply is carrying a couple 1" wide poly wheels now.

Seems like you are only some 2" wheels away from a 2x72. Just extend that tooling arm out and viola!

That's very true

If you want to try it and keep the DIY approach intact, you can find some inner-tubes for tires a bit smaller than your large wheel and cut a few 1 piece bands that will fit snug over your wheel.

Did you cast your own wheel ? I think I see some casting inclusions...?

The locking shaft collars are both on the pulley side, wouldn't you want one on each side to prevent play in both directions ?

You sure that thing is not built after a tank boy that has to be the heaviest 1x42 grinder ever, LOOKS AWESOME

Wow! Looks great, has to be the stoutest 1x42 I have ever seen. I would love to have this little grinder in the shop.

Job well done!

Great work, at your level of workmanship and your rate of progress, spend one more afternoon and you will have a 2x72. Helll, spend three more days and you could have built a free one for me and have shipped it already (in exchange for my inspirational personal coaching of course).

Purdiest 2" X 42" Grinder I've ever seen. Nice job.
I'm sure we'll see a 2" X 72" soon with that kind of talent.

Actually it was scrap tubing with a torch cut plate welded into place, I didn't do that great of a job welding it in and there were some inclusions that didn't come out during turning, and I didn't bother to go back and fix em. Locking collars should be a big deal(it's not going anywhere as is I don't think??), but I can flip the one side around, and have them both to the inside, but both outside would interfere with my tooling arm.
