My sister and her boyfriend were over for a visit when the package arrived. I had kind of forgotten about the BK4 because I thought it would take a couple weeks. Then I saw all the "k"s on the mailing label and my heart went all a flutter. I spirited it away to my workbench and opened it up:

...and then...

Why, that's not epoxy powder coat and Grivory, that's bead blasted with micarta.

...with accessories.

How could luck shine so brightly down on one man? I'll give you a hint: I'm full of s#*t. I blasted it last night and scavenged the polished micarta, Olean Remora and Diafold from the 77. Anyway, here's another picture.

Nice work! that polished micarta looks great! Mine should be here soon, hopefully. I was billed but haven't recieved any communication about shipping info from Ka-Bar...

They're never to pretty for that. Sometimes you need to beat the pretty ones to keep them in line. And besides, the bead blasting was easy. It took a while to get the black off, but putting the finish on the steel was fast and a little like spraying paint. My photog skills are limited to what my point and shoot can do for me, so you'll just have to guess at the two tone finish. The flats don't appear to be machined, so they came out kind of pebbled. The bevels retained quite a bit of the belt finish, so there is a subtle pattern. I had to take pictures because I don't think the blade will ever look this sterile again.

Any pics from the process?

Allright you got me. I thought maybe here and there were special special promo blades and if only I could be that lucky!! Doh! Looks super man!! I'm still waiting, but it's on its way.

Whats with that micarta? Does it have some sort of clear coat on it?

Those are the standard micarta handles sanded and buffed. They feel great. They're not quite as "tacky" as the rough micarta(which I think is blasted after milling, but I'm not sure on that), though they still have a comfy grip to them. I think I might add some liners so the handle is closer in thickness to the BK2.

Now, THIS is the way the LE machaxs should have been made and delivered in. Who agrees?

Its been buffed.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm still reveling at how easy it was to get an awesome finish from that blast cabinet. I've hand sanded many times and it's nothing I endeavor to do again on hardened steel. I'm thinking a chemical strip followed by a blasting could get this done start to finish in less than an hour. It was so easy. Did I mention how easy it was?

I didn't take any pictures, but there wasn't much to it. It looked pretty shabby when I finally removed all the coating, and I wasn't sure it was going to look good(oh well). I put it back into the cabinet to clean it up and 10-15 minutes later in came out looking like I almost know what I'm doing.
